2014 Campus Sustainability Survey Extended

Friday is last day to contribute to York safety initiatives!
The annual campus sustainability survey put together by IRIS and the University administration has been doing very well but we need a few more responses! This year's topic focuses on the experiences of being an active bystander at York University, as well as views about campus safety. This information will inform the university about future safety initiatives, particularly about current knowledge and concerns, feelings about intervening, and feelings abut the general community. The survey is anonymous and open to students, staff and Faculty of York University.

Completing the survey allows you the opportunity to win a Metropass! Please take ten minutes to complete the survey!

IRIS Members Launch New Books

Highlighting IRIS Achievements in Research

Last week IRIS was proud to host a book launch for two core faculty members: Dawn Bazely and Ellie Perkins. The first book, Environmental and Human Security in the Arctic, written by York biology Professor Dawn Bazely and Gunhild Hoogensen Gjrv of the University of Troms, explores human security relevance to the Arctic and what achieving it can mean, covering the areas of health of the environment, identity of peoples, supply of traditional foods, community health, economic opportunities, and political stability. The second book, Water and Climate Change in Africa: Challenges and community initiatives in Durban, Maputo and Nairobi; edited by environmental studies Professor Ellie Perkins, highlights how water governance is a crucial aspect of climate change resilience because weather extremes are the main way that climate change manifests itself. Be sure to read up on these as well as other recent IRIS publications.

More About IRIS and this Newsletter

The Institute for Research and Innovation in Sustainability is a university-wide research centre that pursues an interdisciplinary approach to the challenges of sustainability. Through our collaborations on sustainability related research projects and innovative initiatives, we hope to generate awareness amongst the York University community of our social, natural and economic spheres, while engaging students, staff and faculty in action that creates change on campus and beyond.

The IRIS Newsletter is a way to keep you informed about what we are up to so that you can drop by an event, get involved, or just learn about what research projects we are currently undertaking. The Newsletter is sent out once or twice per month, highlighting the IRIS, York University, and broader community's sustainability news and events!
