The Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) is the recipient of the 2024 Innovative Risk Management Award for the creation of the region's first Public Works Academy. This program is designed to address a critical need for comprehensive training, both classroom and practical, for employees new to the profession.

The 40-hour program tackles a wide range of topics, including lock-out/tag-out, fall protection, trenching and shoring, and confined space. At the end of the 5-day program, students will have a strong foundation for employers to build upon.

IRMA Members receive a $100 discount and can utilize an IRMA Grant to offset the costs.

Within IRMA, Police Department claims lead amongst all operating departments in frequency and severity of claims. In addition to an increase of workers' compensation claims for PTSD, we regularly receive high-exposure general liability claims from police pursuits, wrongful death cases, and reverse conviction cases.

IRMA partnered with Benchmark Analytics to bring their 10 Evidence Based Practice to departments, which if enacted have proven results in reducing claims.

Departments that are interested in participating in 2025 should contact Director of Risk Management, Jen Swahlstedt.
