NURSE'S CORNER: TEEN ATHLETES AND SUPPLEMENTS
Many teens and young athletes believe that taking supplements, such as protein powders or creatine, will help them perform better in sports. However, studies show that these products usually do not make a difference for young people who already eat a healthy diet.
During puberty, the body naturally builds strength and speed, meaning creatine often adds no extra benefit. Furthermore, most young athletes obtain sufficient protein through regular foods, though vegetarians may need additional help planning their meals to ensure adequate intake. Crucially, supplements are not strictly regulated by the FDA; they may contain ingredients not listed on the label or substances that could be unsafe.
Instead of relying on supplements, young athletes should focus on the basics: drinking enough water, eating balanced meals (especially breakfast!), getting plenty of sleep, and practicing regularly. These are the safest and most effective ways to improve athletic performance.
Please take a look at this article from the American Academy of Pediatrics for more information.
Please let me know if there are any specific health topics you would like to see covered in the future. Have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Mention Our School: When you arrive and check in, you must notify the rink staff that you are with International School.
-
That's It! Our PTSA will automatically get credit for your visit.
Important Note: The $3 donation can only be tracked when you notify the staff in person upon arrival. It is not tracked through the online e-ticketing platform, so please don't forget this simple but critical step!
