"Governing In and Through A Pandemic"
by Cathy Trower and Peter Eckel

It is always a gift when governance consultant, Cathy Trower, shares her wisdom and expertise with us! Cathy Trower and colleague Peter Eckel have just written an insightful piece highlighting the governance challenges school boards are facing during this crisis but also how this crisis can be an opportunity for boards to evolve their governance practices to a better place that will hopefully carry over post-pandemic.

Originally written for the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB), Cathy and Peter adapted it for K-12 schools. Their article candidly reflects the challenges of independent school boards right now, including, meeting virtually, being overwhelmed by details, strain on the board-Head relationship., etc. They get what you are struggling with and offer some concrete advice in the following areas..

Get the Mind Set Right and Appreciate Complexity
Focus on Priorities
Rethink Meeting Time and Structure
Recast Committee Work
Prep Differently
Have Different Conversations with the Head
Call Out Blind Spots

This is a must read for all of us as we launch into this new school year!
