From SWOT to SOAR
Thinking about a major fundraising campaign or capital campaign? Those campaigns should be deeply rooted in a strategic vision, not just a strategic plan. The Compass Group, a fundraising consulting group, shares that the origins of many strategic plans are too often rooted in weaknesses determined from a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats).
Instead, they are suggesting that the Board and senior leadership adapt a SOAR approach (strengths, opportunities, aspirations and results) to create an "overarching vision that enhances your mission and drives the establishment and
attainment of your goals. Vision inspires your strategic plan, which informs the creation of a Case for Support, ultimately providing the rationale and urgency for your fundraising campaign."
