Decreasing the Polarization Around DEI
DEI continues to be a complex and sensitive topic in today’s environment. Many boards hesitate to engage in these conversations out of concern that they may inadvertently deepen polarization or be misunderstood. The fear of saying the wrong thing can make it challenging to address the issues openly, even when they are essential to the school’s mission and community.
But what if there were a unifying approach that could help bridge the divide between those who are strongly supportive of DEI and those who feel resistant to it? In his article, “6 Gut-Level Reasons People Say ‘No’ to DEI,” Dr. Pascal Losambe explains that our core values — or “moral intuitions” — shape how we make sense of the world and influence our decision-making. When people do not see their core values reflected or respected in DEI efforts, they are more likely to view them as exclusionary rather than inclusive.
