ISCA Member Survey on Board ChairTenure

73 ISCA members responded to our recent survey inquiring about board chair tenure.
While we will continue to analyze the data from this survey, I wanted to share some quick takeaways:
More than a third of boards (34.2%) do not define in their bylaws how long board chairs can serve in their role. I was surprised this number was so high. It would be an advised practice to describe the length of service for board chairs in your bylaws even if that is flexible or unlimited.
Another chart to take into consideration is the wide range of term length and number of renewable terms that boards have adopted. There were so many unique configurations as indicated by the 'other' category and 21.2% of participants indicated that board chair service is 'unlimited' and at their school. To dig a little deeper into the data, click here to view the number of renewable terms for 1 year, 2 year, 3 year and 4 year terms. It seems that overall, the most prevalent combination is a 3 year term, renewable once.
We hope to discuss this topic of board chair tenure, the pros and cons of short vs longer service and the impact both have on the school in a future ISCA program. Thank you to those members who took the time to complete this survey and provide a glimpse into the trends of board chair service.

Member Directory Update!
The most recent update to our ISCA member directory is available on our members page of the ISCA website. We hope you take a minute to take a look at it as it divided into two sections: Alphabetical listing by member name and then by State. Connecting with your peers is a great way to find support!
