Is Your House In Order?

As schools and boards prepare for a summer break, summer is a good time to consider your school's document retention and destruction policy. Such a policy is required of all non-profit organizations. Summer is a good time to insure that proper destruction of documents takes place and of course on-going organization of required retention documents. While this actual task is completed by staff, your board policy will shape how this gets done.

Document retention and destruction policies should be reviewed by your school's legal counsel to insure compliance with federal and state laws. A sample document retention and destruction policy provided by the National Council for Nonprofits and the AICPA is provided below along with a general IRS Compliance guide for Non-profits.
