Food production that involves certain types of additives or flavorings can put employees at serious risk and create workers' comp liabilities for employers. Manufacturers should limit worker exposures to artificial flavors containing diacetyl and related chemicals by providing additional respiratory protection.

A 2013 paper by the Firefighter Cancer Support Network recommended 11 immediate protective actions, including wearing the self-contained breathing apparatus from the first attack of a fire through the "overhaul" period where crews look for hidden fires; using wipes, immediately and while still on the scene, to clean soot from the head, neck, jaw, throat, underarms and hands; changing and washing clothes right after a fire and thoroughly showering; and cleaning gear such as gloves, hood and helmet immediately.
