The Pros of Cons

Dr. Roz's Corner

I’m really looking forward to the AASECT Conference next week. I’m a con fan, a true extravert, always up for a large gathering of like-minded people in so many of my communities. But it isn’t only extraverts who love conferences, and conferences are important for so many reasons.

The Myers-Briggs Introvert label refers to people who get their energy more from internal reflection or alone time as opposed to MB Extraverts, who get energy from others. An MB Introvert will tend to read a book, scroll through Insta or binge a show when they are drained, where an MB Extravert will tend to call a friend or go out for a boost.

So why does everybody benefit from a con? Because cons bring learning and classes together with groups of people. The AASECT conference, for instance, is large but also has small group activities within workshops, meetings with Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and a ton of great learning sessions where you can just sit and listen to your heart’s delight.

In addition, we get to meet our peers in this often-lonely career choice we have made. Sex educators and clinicians often feel like we have no one we can talk to about our work, but at AASECT, we can feel at home.

The other thing I love about cons in general is that they bring people together face-to-face. I have often been surprised at how far my online impression of someone can be from who they actually are. On a purely physical level, this can be really funny. An ISEE alum met me in Tucson a couple of years ago, and the first thing out of her mouth when I met her at the airport was “OMG, you are adorable!” (I’m 5’4". Apparently I look taller online!)

But on another level, there is just so much more to someone’s energy, someone’s essence, when we meet in person. There is also something electric and exciting about gathering in a large group or ballroom where we are all sharing the same experience. It’s a human experience.

What about you? Maybe I will see you at AASECT. Stop by the ISEE exhibitor booth for a t-shirt, a book or a hug.

If not, got any more pros about cons? :)

How to make a 'zine with one sheet of paper

Thanks so much to Kat Rainsong for sharing this cool YouTube video for how to create an 8 page foldable 'zine using only one sheet of paper. A 'zine is a mini-magazine, often hand made, and some people are true fans of this art form. For how to, click on the YouTube video here.
