Summer 2019
Article12019 International Society for Fall Protection Symposium Recap
On June 13, 2019, in partnership with the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), we delivered the 2019 ISFP Symposium in New Orleans, Louisiana. This event provided a forum for safety practitioners, regulators and scholars to discuss ways to reduce or eliminate fall injuries and fatalities. The presentations also addressed regulatory compliance issues related to fall protection and work at heights. Our presenters, led by keynote speakers Babak Memarian and Thomas Kramer, were described as both "outstanding" and "thought provoking" by the attendees.

Article1Major Fall Protection Equipment Recalls

Please take note of two major fall protection equipment recalls that have occurred this summer. We encourage you to review the recall notices and follow the appropriate procedures if you own the equipment in question.

On July 25, 2019, 3M Fall Protection announced an immediate stop use and product recall of the 3M™ DBI-SALA® Twin-Leg Nano-Lok™ edge and the Twin-Leg Nano-Lok™ Wrap Back Self-Retracting Lifelines. According to 3M's stop use and recall notice, the company "determined that in a fall and under certain conditions, the energy absorber of these devices may not properly deploy which could expose the worker to serious injury or death." The official recall notice provides additional details about the recall, as well as what organizations who own this equipment should do.

In August, Honeywell issued a statement to inform consumers of potentially non-conforming brake components in certain models of Miller MightEvac and MightyLite Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs) manufactured within a specific timeframe. While there have been NO reported incidents due to this nonconformity, the recall notice warns that continued use of the product could result in serious injury or death.
article2Is Your Membership Current?

Due to challenges with ISFP's automated emails and online membership renewals earlier this year, your membership may have lapsed. Be sure to renew your membership to get discounts and access to ISFP events and information.

Members of ISFP include safety professionals, engineers, managers, and workers in many different fields who work with, or are interested in, fall protection issues. Members receive e-newsletters that provide updated information about the fall protection industry and are eligible for discounts on all ISFP events. Most significantly, members become part of an international organization devoted to reducing and eliminating fall-related injuries and deaths.

Supreme Court Rules Actions Intentional vs. Accidental in Employee Injury Case
July 17, 2019
The Oklahoma Supreme Court recently issued a decision in the case of Wells v. Oklahoma Roofing and Sheet Metal. The case involved an employee of Oklahoma Roofing and Sheet Metal who was working on the roof of a three-story building and died from a fall after his employer required him to unhook his fall protection. The Supreme Court was deciding whether the directive from the employer to remove the safety device was an "intentional" act and therefore the result was not an "accident."
