Announcement for Ramadan-Shawwal
1447/2026
| |
January 20, 2026
The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months, including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA has historically used the criteria of the European Council of Fatwa and Research (ECFR), which are that somewhere on the globe, at sunset, the elongation should be at least 8 degrees and the moon should be at least 5 degrees above the horizon. If these conditions are met, then it is certain that the moon is above the horizon and will be visible somewhere on the globe. Hence the new lunar month will start the next day, otherwise it will start on the day following the next.
Ramadan 1447 AH: The Astronomical New Moon will be born on the evening of Tuesday, February 17, 2026. So, the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday, February 18, 2026, inshā’Allāh. Tarāwīḥ prayer will start on Tuesday night.
ʿEid al-Fitr 1447 AH: The Astronomical New Moon will be born on the evening of Thursday, March 19, 2026. On that evening the elongation is more than 8 degrees and the moon is more than 5 degrees above the horizon. Hence the first day of Shawwal (ʿEid al-Fitr) is Friday, March 20, 2026, inshā’Allāh.
For ʿEid al-Adha, the Fiqh Council of North America, as usual, will determine the date based on the announcement by the Hajj authorities in Makkah regarding the day of ʿArafah. ʿEid al-Adha will be observed on the day following the day of ʿArafah.
We pray Allah blesses the Ummah with peace and prosperity!

ChatGPT Did My Homework — Now What?
Contending with AI in the Contemporary Classroom
By Raudah Yunus
Jan/Feb 26
We are living in a moment of educational upheaval. Across schools and universities, students are increasingly turning to advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools including ChatGPT, Grammarly, and AI-powered tutoring apps that analyze textbook problems and generate step-by-step solutions. According to a report by Education Week, approximately 85% of high school and college students, along with their teachers, reported using AI in their learning or teaching workflows. These tools are no longer experiments on the fringes of education; they are deeply embedded in how assignments are completed and how ideas are generated...

The Betrayal of Spirit
Muslim World’s Crisis Is Not of Faith, but of Meaning
By Faisal Kutty
Jan/Feb 26
The Muslim world today is adrift, torn between rigid conservatism that fears thought, shallow modernism that mimics Western “progress” without meaning, and a confused religiosity that substitutes emotion, ritual, and the selfish pursuit of heaven for understanding and living God’s vision. Muslims have lost the balance that once made their civilization a beacon of wisdom, mercy, and justice. The heart of malaise is not ignorance of faith, but the betrayal of its spirit...

In the Bishkek Central Mosque, children tumble across prayer carpets, their laughter echoing off the marble walls. A group of them chase each other in a game of tag while others scatter into the courtyard to play soccer. The scene shifts suddenly when a voice calls out in Kyrgyz, and the children scurry inside to gather around a small chalkboard...
