Volume 20 | No. 3 | September 2018
From the ISOPP President
In the last edition of ISOPP’s Enewsletter, I proudly reported that we had a volunteer force of 26% of the total membership and outlined the resulting progress. I am equally proud to say that the progress continues as our volunteers are engaging in interesting and relevant projects. In our newly established Biosimilars Task Force, one of the sub groups is working on a survey to assess members’ training and education needs in relation to the introduction and use of biosimilars in their practice (see Emma Foreman’s update below).

Also, the Education Committee has several initiatives in development, one of which is a general education needs assessment survey. Watch your inbox for requests to complete both these surveys in the next few months. Your input is essential as it guides the work of the Committees and Task Forces and determines the products and services that ISOPP offers, a vital process to ensure your membership stays relevant and of value to you.

Beginnings of Oncology Partnership in Africa
By Tegan Bilse, Netcare Garden City Hospital

We have a saying that we use colloquially here, in response to any number of difficulties. We say “TIA, this is Africa”. It usually refers to a struggle, a difficulty or our government officials, and reminds us to do the best with what we have. With an over-burdened government sector serving the majority of the population, scarcity of resources and skills are unfortunately all too common.

UICC Technical Fellowships: Call for Mentors

I SOPP is partnering with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to facilitate the matching of Oncology Pharmacists wanting person-to-person training in specific areas that are relevant to cancer control activities and clinical management with mentors around the world willing to offer that training.

The UICC Technical Fellowships provide funding for successful applicants to travel to an extramural site to gain experience from mentors that will be of benefit to both the applicant and their institution.

To assist UICC in adjudicating applicants, ISOPP is compiling a list of Mentors with specific skills and experience who are willing to host a fellow Oncology Pharmacist. You will receive an email from the Society Management Office, in the next few days, asking you to express your interest, should you wish do so, through an online site.

UICC Technical Fellowships: Call for Applicants

ISOPP Members can apply for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Technical Fellowships. These fellowships provide funding for recipients to visit another centre to learn and be mentored in a skill that the pharmacist does not currently possess and will be of benefit to the recipient and their current institution. Applicants will be required to have their manager or a senior institutional administrator 'sign off' on their application. The funding varies with how far/where the recipient wants to travel to, but could potentially fund between 2-4 weeks of extramural training/mentorship.

More information on these Fellowships and how to apply can be found on the UICC website at: https://www.uicc.org/capacity-building/grants/fellowships/uicc-technical-fellowships

These fellowships are available year round, so you can apply at any time throughout the year. If you apply and are successful in receiving one of these Fellowships, please let ISOPP know via email at advocacy@isopp.org so we can share your success with the ISOPP Community.
