Welcome from the President
As we move into this new season, the air carries both the energy of change and the familiar rhythms of “back to school” time. For many of us, this is a busy season of transition—whether returning to the classroom, guiding students, or re-engaging with renewed focus in our clinical, research, and advocacy roles.
I am especially pleased to celebrate a milestone for ISPN: by consensus vote, we have amended our bylaws and created the Fellow of ISPN (FISPN) designation. This recognition will honor those who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nursing through evidence-based practice, leadership, education, research, and policy. We look forward to sharing more about this exciting development and how you can become a FISPN at our Annual Conference on March 18-21, 2026 in Seattle.
Speaking of Seattle, what activities are you most looking forward to? Whether it’s engaging in lively scholarly sessions, networking with colleagues from around the globe, or simply enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, our annual gathering promises to be both enriching and rejuvenating. For myself since I have only been to Seattle one time I am looking forward to re-discovering all the city has to offer. I am especially looking forward to seeing and learning from all the psychiatric-mental health leaders who INSPIRE (Involve patients, Nurture therapeutic relationships, Support recovery, Promote mental wellness, Integrate holistic approaches, Respect individuality and Empower through education) me.
In the meantime, your ISPN Board and committees remain hard at work on your behalf—hosting ongoing listening sessions which have provided ISPN members a place to be heard and learn how to take action on any number of concerns you have in your community. Look for future sessions to come after the New Year. Our Policy Not Politics webinars developed and hosted by the Policy committee continued to inspire ISPN members on how to take action and has been informed by the listening sessions. Thought-provoking Lunch and Learn webinars presented by the membership committee continue to highlight the wisdom of our members and provide valuable continuing education units. Lastly, I am planning to travel to Barcelona, Spain in November to represent ISPN at the Mental Health Nursing Leaders’ Summit. One of the aims of this summit is to promote the establishment of an International Council or Congress of Mental Health Nursing. I look forward to sharing more details and picture(s) of these travels in future communications. These efforts ensure that ISPN continues to be a place where your voice is heard and your professional growth is supported.
If you would like to be more involved with ISPN, I warmly invite you to reach out to me directly. Send me an email—let me know how ISPN can support and spotlight the many INSPIR(E)ational things you are doing in research, practice, advocacy, and education. Together, we will continue to strengthen our community and advance the future of psychiatric-mental health nursing worldwide.
Warmly,

This year’s conference theme, Innovate, Integrate, INSPIRE: Charting the Future of Psychiatric Nursing, has inspired a remarkable response from our global community. Each abstract will undergo a double-blinded review process, ensuring fairness, quality, and diversity in the development of our program. Submitters will be notified of acceptance on November 6th 2025.
We are also excited to announce our featured speakers for the 2026 conference. This year’s keynote and endnote speakers are recognized leaders and experts in their fields, carefully selected in response to feedback from past conference evaluations highlighting the topics our members most valued. In addition, we are proud to present our two award plenary speakers, whose contributions to psychiatric-mental health nursing exemplify excellence and innovation. Update from the Policy Committee
Brief on New and Impending National Policy Changes
| | |
The summer has been a busy one with numerous legislative changes impacting health care and
nurses in the United States. As of early September, serious cuts in services offered through
Medicaid and CHIP and the likely loss of $49 million dollars in Title VIII funding for the nursing
workforce development and nursing scholarship are anticipated. As active members in the
Nursing Community Coalition, the Mental Health Liaison Group and the Coalition for Whole
Health, ISPN has signed on to multiple letters in support of Medicaid/CHIP services,
reappropriation of Title VIII, 988 services specific to the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals, telehealth
care access, NINR and SAMSHA. Specifics for many are available at
https://www.mhlg.org/issue-statements/ and https://www.thenursingcommunity.org/
September 30, the close of the fiscal year, marked the end of legislative session. Of particular
concern are losses of safety net services provided by Medicaid. One example is provided by the
Commonwealth Foundation report on the impact of work requirements on states
https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2025/may/medicaid-work-
requirements-job-losses-harm-states. Since Medicaid is partially funded by states, ISPN
members who are concerned about coverage for services may consider advocacy at the state
level. For information about Medicaid in your own state, a user-friendly source like the Modern
Medicaid Alliance website provides information https://data.modernmedicaid.org/MMA/ .
To expand member engagement in policy, the new 4-session series Policy, not Politics:
Advocating for Positive Change began August 28 with a collaborative discussion session. The
second session on September 18, focused on building knowledge of legislation procedures and
their impact on nursing practice and considering actions to influence change in areas of import
to attending members. All sessions are on Thursdays at 4 pm ET.
To sign up, keep a lookout for ISPN registration notices announcing the last two sessions:
- October 23 - Health Policy and the Nurses’ Advocacy Role
- November 13 - a “Hear our Voices” discussion
Work continues on several new policy statements, a means of sharing regular reports on policy
and development of a policy tool-kit. Updates will be in the next newsletter.

We are currently seeking volunteers to contribute to ISPN's growth by joining the following committees/positions:
