November 2024 Update

2024 IT for Dominica Summer Institute

A Successful Year!

67 certified teachers

(PLUS 1 teacher of the future)

It was busy! It was intensive! It was educational!

Our team of four Alberta teachers completed the 24th IT for Dominica Summer Institute in July. The Foundation is always impressed at the talent, the dedication and the enthusiasm our volunteer teachers bring to Dominica each summer.

Two weeks of intensive teaching seems to inspire, rather than tire, these educational aficionados. After forty hours of instruction, awarding of certificates, and connecting with Dominicans from across the island one remaining question seemed to remain: “How can we further help education on the island?”

A big thank you to Darren Maltais (our team lead), Kara Aitkin, Janet Bell, and Michael Chell. Super volunteers and super educators!

Also, a word of appreciation to our guest speakers: Mrs. Celia Nicholas (retired educational leader) and Mr. Hans Schilders (Dominica Rotarian, Portsmouth) for sharing their knowledge and offering support for our leadership work in Dominica.

Building Sustainability

One of the larger challenges faced by Dominica is ensuring that students and

teachers have the necessary technology resources to learn and teach using

modern learning tools. No doubt Dominican educators and our Alberta teachers

bring the skills, enthusiasm and dedication to bring meaningful learning through

learning technologies. The next challenge, much as occurred in Alberta twenty-

five years ago, is a need to transition toward making learning technologies

accessible for all students.

If you are like me, your first thought might be “impossible!” How can a developing

nation, struggling with financial challenges, afford learning technologies for all

students? Research in both Dominica and Alberta shows that expenditures of 2-

3% of educational budgets will provide all of the needed technologies and

supports. This figure holds true in Alberta school districts and holds true in the

Commonwealth of Dominica.

What is needed is to kick-start the process. If you have an interest in joining us to

help students across the nation develop contemporary learning, we welcome

your support.
