New Home, Same Heart:

A new era for the ITC begins

Walls, wiring, and plumbing are going up at the ITC's Frost Tower location.

ITC Blog from Associate Vice Provost Monica Perales

We’re beyond excited to return to the heart of what we do best: celebrating Texans from everywhere, their stories, and their boundless love for this great state. So what have we been up to since closing our former site in May 2024? A lot more than just moving boxes.

New Website Coming Online

Designers are building the new pages for the ITC website.

“This is more than a website—it’s a preview of who we’re becoming. It reflects our evolving mission and the new ways we’re thinking about culture, heritage, and community.”

Big things are happening at the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC), and it all starts online. On August 7, we’re rolling out a brand-new website—just in time to gear up for our move into Frost Tower this fall, and grand opening in the spring of 2026!

The new TexanCultures.utsa.edu is more than just a facelift. It’s a whole new way to connect with the ITC. Whether you’re planning a visit, booking a field trip, or just curious about what’s coming next, the site is designed to make things easier, faster, and more fun to explore.

ITC Docents Begin Training

On June 25, the ITC welcomed back a core group of docents for the first of three training sessions in preparation for our upcoming opening at Frost Tower. This initial session offered a behind-the-scenes look at the past year’s work and introduced our vision for daily operations at the new temporary location.

Our volunteers are the heart of the ITC. Their dedication and enthusiasm are essential to how we operate and to the high-quality experiences we strive to create for every visitor.

What’s ahead:

August: Our second session will focus on the planning and development of the exhibit floor, including a preview of the artifacts that will be on display.

Late October or early November: The final training will take place on-site at Frost Tower, giving docents a firsthand look at the new space before opening.

As we prepare for this exciting transition, we’re also revamping our volunteer program to better support operations at Frost Tower. We will share more information about volunteering opportunities soon—stay tuned!

We’re grateful for our volunteers’ continued support and excited to move forward together into this next chapter.
