ITE Congratulates Nicole Nason on Confirmation as New FHWA Administrator
|
Washington, DC-
The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) congratulates Nicole Nason on being confirmed as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Administrator. Nason has a strong record of federal leadership including as assistant secretary of the Bureau of Administration at the State Department and as National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) administrator and assistant secretary for government affairs at the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).
During her tenure at USDOT, Nason was a strong safety advocate. With 40,000 people dying annually our nation's highways and rising pedestrian and bicycle fatalities in our cities, Nason's safety experience will be a strength at FHWA. Her expertise in establishing vehicle safety standards will be essential as connected and autonomous vehicles continue to emerge into the marketplace and NHTSA and FHWA work together to advance these promising new technologies.
As FHWA Administrator, Nason will play a critical leadership role in overseeing and strengthening a world-class highway system that promotes safety, mobility, and economic growth, while enhancing the quality of life for all Americans. With the current surface transportation authorization expiring in September 2020, Nason's experience in working with the U.S. Congress will help support timely passage of vital infrastructure and highway legislation.
"Nicole Nason's experience as a federal leader and with USDOT will be an asset to FHWA. She understands the challenges that lie ahead in passing an equitable transportation bill that supports the nation's transportation infrastructure," said Jeffrey F. Paniati, ITE Executive Director. "We have appreciated the spirit of partnership Deputy Administrator Brandye Hendrickson has brought to FHWA as she led the agency over the past two years. ITE looks forward to continuing its work with the Federal Highway Administration with Ms. Nason at the helm."
Nason succeeds Gregory Nadeau, who was FHWA administrator from July 2014 until January 2017.
