RESTON, VA., FEBRUARY 5, 2024 – ITEEA’s Elementary STEM Council is proud to announce the winner of the 2023 Grand Design Challenge. The NAE Grand Challenges were designed to cause students and educators to think about solutions and challenges affecting all our lives. In 2023, elementary students from around the world worked in small design teams to develop or modify a product or device that can automatically dispense a full bowl of clean water consistently for three days to help care for a pet while the owner is away.
"Team Oliver," members of Lance Lacey's class at Emerald Hill Elementary School in Culpeper, VA were the winners of this year's challenge. The team won a one-year I-STEM Education Group Membership, one free hotel night in Memphis for the 2024 ITEEA conference, and a spot in ITEEA’s 2024 STEM Showcase.
Council President Dr. Cat Maiorca shared, “On behalf of the Elementary STEM Council, congratulations to Mr. Lacey and his students for winning this year’s challenge. Although all of the submissions offered creative designs, Team Oliver from Emerald Hill Elementary developed an outstanding video presentation of their product and attention to the engineering design process. They created an innovative self-watering bowl for a dog out of low-cost materials.
The 2024 Grand Design Challenge will be announced in late spring. Submissions are due December 15, 2024. Questions can be directed to Michael Daugherty, mkd03@uark.edu, Virginia Jones, vjones@iteea.org, or Thomas Roberts, otrober@bgsu.edu.
