The Irish Myth of "Stingy Jack": According to Irish folklore, a clever but deceitful man named Stingy Jack tricked the Devil multiple times to preserve his own soul. When Jack died, his unsavory life barred him from Heaven, and a resentful Devil refused him entry to Hell. He was condemned to walk the earth for eternity in pitch darkness, carrying a single burning coal handed to him from the fires of Hell. Jack placed the coal into a hollowed-out turnip to guide his way. [1]

The "Jack of the Lantern": Locals began referring to this spectral figure as "Jack of the Lantern," which eventually shortened to jack-o'-lantern. The name was also used historically across Britain to describe ignis fatuus (will-o’-the-wisps)—the eerie glowing gases that naturally combust over marshes and bogs. [1, 2]

The Original Canvases: To scare away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits during Samhain, people in Ireland and Scotland began carving frightening faces into large turnips, potatoes, and beets. [1, 2]
