USC to Sell Students 'Lifesaving' Drug that Reverses Overdoses Without Prescription
University of South Carolina students can now buy a "lifesaving" drug on campus that can help reverse the effects of opioid overdose, the university announced Friday. The drug, naloxone, sold under the brand name Narcan, will be available to all students without a prescription at the Center for Health and Well-Being pharmacy, the university said in a tweet. Price of the drug varies depending on a student's insurance coverage, but without insurance it would cost about $125, USC spokesman Jeff Stensland. The university is applying for a grant that would make the drug free to students, Stensland said. The State
College Football Gameday Safety
Every Saturday throughout the season, alums, and other fans gather together on college campuses to support team traditions, show off school pride and attend all-day affairs filled with food, drinks and music. Tailgating on gameday, and the culture surrounding it, is deeply-rooted into institutions all across the country. Sports Illustrated compiled police records from 33 of the biggest football schools in the country to determine the number and type of incidents that occurred across campus each gameday of the 2017 season. Alabama led the group of schools with the most total number of police incidents on campus while N.C. State reported the highest incident rate among the schools. Sports Illustrated
NIC Fraternities Ban Hard Alcohol in Decisive Action
In an important, decisive action to enhance health and safety in fraternity communities, the North American Interfraternity Conference recently adopted a Standard prohibiting hard alcohol from fraternity chapter facilities and events. At its Aug. 27 Annual Meeting, the Conference determined that each organization will implement the new Standard by Set. 1, 2019, across their more than 6,100 chapters on 800 campuses. This is the latest in a series of NIC Health & Safety Initiatives launched in the last year, including Conference-wide adoption of medical Good Samaritan policies; piloting further measures to reduce alcohol; developing SocialSafe, an online event management platform and app; testing measures to reduce hazing in the new member experience; and advocating for stronger anti-hazing laws. The Cornell New York State Hometown Alumni Award
Christa Glazier was presented with the second Cornell New York State Hometown Alumni Award in Syracuse Aug. 28. The award recognizes Cornell graduates who have returned to their home counties to start or enhance a business or nonprofit, and who regularly volunteer and make an impact in their communities. Glazier said the "common thread" that has been woven through her life since graduating has been that of serving a greater purpose. Cornell's Division of University Relations, in collaboration with Alumni Affairs and Development and other campus units, launched the Cornell University New York State Hometown Alumni Award earlier this year.
