University of Waterloo Students to Get Mental Health First Aid Kits This Fall
First year students at the University of Waterloo will receive a mental health first aid kit during orientation for the first time this year. They're called a PASS kit, which stands for panic, anxiety and stress support. The kits were developed by one of the university's own students, Tina Chan, to help students get through mental health problems. The University of Waterloo recently purchased 7,100 PASS kits to hand out to first-year students this fall. Each kit includes a squeezable stress star, ear plugs, a sleeping mask, a pack of gum and a deck of 25 flash cards with steps a person can take when they are experiencing anxiety or stress symptoms. Should University of Iowa Sophomores Live on Campus? Task Force Weighs Pros and Cons
The University of Iowa is fielding the possibility of requiring freshman and sophomores to live in dorms, a mandate that would require thousands more beds on campus. The conversation comes at a time when the university has halted all construction for budgetary concerns, but a report commissioned by the university and local municipalities outlines a possible win-win situation. Iowa City and Coralville could see much-needed relief from rising rents, and the move might improve the retention of students in the pivotal first two years. Von Stange, senior director of University Housing & Dining, said a task force is in the early stages of developing a "Second Year Experience" housing pilot program, which is slated to launch in fall 2019.
