Class Is in Session: ITLC Delivers Train-the-Trainer Level 1 Courses at SEPTA

Between late January and early February, ITLC delivered two Train-the-Trainer Level 1 courses at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) headquarters in downtown Philadelphia. Train-the-Trainer Level 1 is a four-and-a-half-day training course designed to build foundational knowledge in adult learning theory and principles, providing participants with effective methods, tools, and guidelines emphasizing practical application. It covers classroom and hands-on training strategies and features multiple practice training sessions throughout the week. Instructional Designers Allie Franklyn and Brandon Liu led the January session, while Program Manager for Technical Assistance and Training Amri Joyner and Facilitator Arnett Powell led the February session. Following this, Amri and Arnett conducted a second Level 1 course at SEPTA in early February. The sessions brought together new and veteran instructors from disciplines such as welding, signals, light rail, and bus maintenance.

As participants engaged in practical teaching scenarios, implementation, and delivery of new skills and best practices, they were able to leverage their own training materials and subject matter expertise and received valuable feedback from their peers and ITLC facilitators. Post-course evaluations highlighted the course's effectiveness and engaging format, along with the instructors' clear presentations, the well-structured curriculum, and the practical, step-by-step approach to training. One attendee called the course a “great foundation for trainers" and a "great refresher for experienced trainers.” Participants expressed interest in continuing their development with the Train-the-Trainer Level 2 course, emphasizing the wealth of information gained and the inspiration they received for developing future classes on their own.

ITLC Leads Session at SWTA’s Annual Conference & Expo

Senior Workforce Development Advisor Maurice Beard and Senior Policy Analyst Karitsa Holdzkom presented at the South West Transit Association’s (SWTA) annual conference and expo in February. The conference brought together eight states that constitute what is known as “SWTA Nation,” including Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Karitsa and Maurice led a session titled “Developing Mentoring & Apprenticeship Programs,” exploring how transit agencies can improve retention, recruitment, and overall morale by implementing and sustaining apprenticeship and mentorship programs. Amalgamated Transit Union’s Local 1091’s President and Business Agent Brent Payne joined the discussion during the session and provided an on-the-ground perspective, reviewing initial challenges and emphasizing the significance of a strong labor-management relationship that allowed its agency to develop an additional program for paratransit operators.

Survey

N-CATT Data Literacy Survey

The Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida is conducting a survey for the Data Literacy Initiative. The initiative is sponsored by the Federal Transit Administration to increase the knowledge and utilization of data analytics capabilities in small-urban, rural, and tribal public transit agencies. It will allow smaller transit agencies to benefit from the increased safety, operational efficiencies, and improvements in the customer experience afforded by data analytics initiatives.

This survey is designed to better understand current practices, challenges, and opportunities related to data usage, tools, and decision-making within rural, tribal, and small-urban transit agencies, helping the National Center for Applied Transit Technology (N-CATT) create tailored technical assistance resources, training, and tools to enhance data literacy and capacity across the transit industry.

The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. For additional information and assistance, please contact Martin Catala at catala@usd.edu
