A Message from ITMA President, Paul Buttrose
|
Dear Members and friends of the International Twelve Metre Class,
Renowned sailing ‘hotspots’ Cannes, Marstrand and Newport were the venues for season ending 12 Metre regattas in September. All well attended and competitive. A special note to Regates Royale in Cannes with the revival of 12 Metre racing in Southern Europe. Race reports from each region are elsewhere in this newsletter and on our website, 12mRClass.com.
Planning is well underway for the 2023 12 Metre World Championship to be held from July 31 to August 5 in Newport, RI along with dates for the lead up events. A schedule of events for 2023 for Fleets in Northern Europe and Southern Europe will be finalized and published by December 31. Stay tuned to 12mRWorlds.com and 12mRClass.com.
For the past eighteen months, Technical Director Ken McAlpine, his committee, Dyer Jones, Kay-Enno Brink, owners and representatives of Division D yachts have been working tirelessly in an attempt to resolve questions within the ADCF formula. Recent open forums, video conferences and in-person meetings have resulted in transparent presentations of various positions. The common thread being “continued success and growth of the 12 Metre Class.” A consensus on how the Class moves forward is expected by December 31.

Who Is ITMA and What Do We Do?
|
|
The 112 year-old International 12 Metre Class encompasses a living history of racing yacht design by the world’s foremost naval architects including Olin Stephens, Clinton Crane, William Fife III, Philip Rhodes, Johan Anker, Ben Lexcen and more who pushed their designs to the very limits of innovation. The resulting boats represented the pinnacle of yacht development from 1907-1987 for the highest levels of international sailing competition– the Olympic Games (1908-1920) and the America’s Cup (1958-1987).

Late season 12mR sailing in Newport included the North American Championship, hosted by the 12MYC with perennial race committee support by Ida Lewis Yacht Club. In the Traditional (+Vintage) Division Columbia (US-16) claimed first place after sailing a nearly perfect regatta scoring 6 points over the 5-race regatta. Vintage 12mR Onawa (US-6), racing above her division with the Traditionals, took second. In the 2-boat Modern division Challenge XII (KA-10) and Enterprise (US-27) ended tied with 8 points-- KA-10 had the winning score with 1-2-1-1-DNF(3) vs. US-27's 2-1-2-2-1.

American Eagle (US-21) Women's Team Prevails at Nantucket
Jephtha Tausig on teamwork and continuing the tradition of women racing US-21.
|
|
At the 2022 Nantucket Regatta, the All-Women's team aboard American Eagle (US-21) claimed first place in Division 3, soaring past six other boats to victory.
When asked, why 12mRs? Jeph replied, “They are amazing boats to sail. Yes, the loads are heavy, but by leaning into intelligence, multi-tasking, practice and determination, we are able to maximize our abilities. Naturally there is an ongoing generational shift as veteran crew members retire and younger men and women emerge to fill positions. We are especially thrilled to help bring the next generation of women sailors into 12mR racing.”
Team Members: Beth Colocci, Jephtha Tausig, Kim Frisbie & Deborah Winsor
For Jephtha, the most meaningful part of racing with this team is the amazing camaraderie among the crew. Egos are checked at the dock and positions are assigned pragmatically... continue reading

With the assistance of Easterner owner Scott Bernard, US-18 ITMA's database record is now updated.
|

Easterner (US-18)
1958-1966: Built for the Chandler Hovey family at the Graves Yacht Yard in Marblehead, MA. Designed by C. Raymond Hunt, Easterner (US-18) entered the 1958, 1962 and 1964 Defender Trials sailing for the Eastern Yacht Club. Although the boat had great potential, as she was considered the fastest of the 1958 12mRs, she was unsuccessful in capturing the Defender position. In 1962 she won the Astor Cup (NYYC) and the Queen’s Cup (NYYC) in 1964.
1967-1995: She was purchased by John F. Baillie who renamed her Newsboy. During this time her homeport was Newport Beach, CA. She had an extensive interior refit suitable for extended offshore racing on the west coast, including installing a small piano... continue reading

France (F-1)
1970: France (F-1) was one of the national flagships of modern yachting. An exceptional boat, it is the first to have defended the colors of France in the America’s Cup. Designed by French naval architect André Mauric and built in France – as required by the America’s Cup regulations – in Pontarlier (Doubs), the first 12 Meter J.I. New and high-tech construction techniques were employed particularly for the construction of the hull in 3 plies of mahogany of more than 30 years and for the winches made in France under the direction of Claude Bich. She was launched in La Trinité-sur-Mer (Morbihan), where sailing conditions are comparable to those at Newport (RI); she was christened in May and after a month of testing with trail horses Chancegger (F-4) and Constellation (F-20), all three are sent to Newport, RI to continue preparations… continue reading

THIS MONTH IN 12mR HISTORY: OCTOBER 1967
Dame Pattie (KA-2), Yachting World "cover girl"
|
|
“Dame Pattie can lay claim to being the second fastest 12-metre in the world, and to having surpassed the winner of the last challenge in the face of greater difficulties, since the change in the rule, than anyone before. She is a fine boat, of which her designer and all concerned must be proud. She failed to win only because, good as she was, the defender was just a little bit better, in almost every respect: a more experienced 12-metre campaigner and helmsman in Bus Mosbacher, better rig, better sails, better sail-handling, better hull. Each separately scarcely enough to notice; together insuperable.” –J.R. Macalpine-Downie

12mR Class President
The seed of passion for 12 Metres was planted off the coast of New South Wales in his native Australia watching Dame Pattie, Gretel and Vim tune up in preparation for the 1967 Australian challenge for the America's Cup.
In 1980 after a ten year ‘career’ in ocean racing, Paul settled in Newport, RI. Volunteer pursuits in sailing commenced September 27th, 1983 following the presentation of the Americas Cup to the Australia II Syndicate at Marble House. A meeting that morning with Robin Wallace (ITMA Treasurer for 42 years) and Bart Dunbar resulted in the formation of SAIL NEWPORT.
Paul was elected ITMA VP for the Americas Fleet in November of 2011, President in 2005- 2007 and re-elected President in 2021.
