What We've Been Up To...
Matlahuayl Birch Event
Kumeyaay community members spent the day at Birch Aquarium at Scripps for a roundtable discussion addressing ways the Aquarium can be a welcoming place for the local tribal communities. Birch aims to integrate Native culture, history, and language into their exhibits and educational programs.
Indigenous Futures Lab
UC San Diego faculty and staff along with the ITRC met to discuss ideas for an Indigenous Futures lab on campus. The vision for the Indigenous Futures lab is to create a research collective of primarily faculty who are working on projects that might fit the umbrella of forwarding Indigenous Futures. If you are interested in getting involved, contact the ITRC at itrc@ucsd.edu for more information.
Kumeyaay Community College classes and board meeting
The ITRC, campus partners, and the Kumeyaay Community College board met to discuss future collaborations. Discussions on partnerships are ongoing but in the meantime, check out the classes the KCC will be offering this spring! All are welcome to register for classes. Follow the link to learn more: KCC Spring 2020 class schedule.
I'm Going to College
The ITRC recently welcomed students from the UCSD Class of 2031 to campus. The fourth graders from the Pechanga Tribal School experienced a day in the life of a college student. Thank you to our campus partners for participating and thank you to our student leaders (Victoria, Jasmine, Matthew, Kelly, Leonard and Alexis) for proving to be exceptional role models as Native college and graduate students!
UC San Diego Native American Initiatives Meeting
During week 1, the ITRC hosted a gathering of campus faculty, staff, students and affiliates who are advancing various interests, issues and initiatives with tribal communities and serving Native American students. The gathering was a great success and illustrated the many efforts by individuals and departments to support Indian Education and build positive relationships with our local tribal communities. Keep an eye out for the announcement for our Spring gathering.

Thank you to everyone who participated. If you would like to be included at our next gathering, please email us at itrc@ucsd.edu.
