Meet our new Graduate Student Assistant!
Kelly (Luiseno/Tongva) is a first year doctoral student in the Joint Degree Program (UCSD/CSUSM) in Educational Leadership. She earned an MA in American Indian Studies from the UCLA and a BA in Psychology from Cal State Poly, Pomona. Her masters thesis, (Re)writing and (Re)righting California Indian Histories: Legacies of Saint Boniface Indian Industrial School, 1890 to 1935, focused on a (re)telling of the history of Saint Boniface from a multi-generational California Indian perspective and examined the lasting legacy of the Southern California Indian boarding school experience. She will be supporting the ITRC in research activities and program events. Welcome Kelly!

What We've Been Up To...
AISES Leadership Summit
AISES @ UCSD had an insightful experiences at the AISES Leadership Summit. The Summit was held from February 16-18th at the Pechanga Resort. Sessions included information relevant to undergraduates, graduates, professionals (professors, technicians, entrepreneurs, tribal leaders, program directors, etc). The Summit reached capacity, and the full house was charged for the transfer of knowledge that ensued.
Undergraduate and Graduate students attended from UCSD and benefited from discussions and workshops led by Native leaders in science and technology working for the environment, the government, private industries, universities, and tribal nations. Participants of all levels were encouraged to engage in professional and personal settings.
The fruits of collaboration and discourse will empower and enrich our Native leaders till the next Summit.
Indigenous Writers and their Critics: International Symposium
Symposium participants had the opportunity to engage with contemporary Indigenous writing featuring Indigenous language and literature researchers from the United States and Mexico. Sessions included spoken-word performances, poetry readings, and a film screening. The symposium was organized by faculty from the UC San Diego Department of Literature, Dr. Gloria Chacón and Dr. Kathryn Walkiewicz, and Latin American Studies Librarian Dr. Sarah Buck Kachaluba. Land acknowledgement was given by the ITRC's director, Dr. Elena Hood.
InterTribal Sports Basketball Championship
Dr. Elena Hood and 2nd year NASA member, Anthony Hurtado provided an info and outreach table at this year's InterTribal Sports Basketball Tournament held at Cal State University, San Bernardino.
