Dear UC San Diego campus community,
Now more than ever we must take care of each other. Many of the current events have illuminated the ways that our communities are specifically and disproportionately impacted. We, as UC San Diego’s Campus Community Centers and Programs, want to name the impact of these legacies and intersecting realities, and what we are experiencing as we teach, learn, and work remotely.
Over the last few months, the compound and complex trauma of our intersecting, diverse communities is being felt deeply. We are collectively experiencing the impact of the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, as well as the weaponizing of law enforcement against Black and African American people, further amplifying the voice of white supremacy; deaths in ICE detention centers, including the first death in the nation here in San Diego of Carlos Ernesto Escobar Mejia, as well as the continued harassment and neglect of our Asian Pacific Islander American and Native American communities. The disparate ways that people experience enforcement of issues related to wearing masks, opening businesses, and social distancing has a gendered and racialized component that cannot be ignored. The intersections of gender, race, sexuality, class, age, and documentation status can be places where traumas compound but those intersections can also serve as powerful places for organizing.
The staff of the Campus Community Centers and Programs choose to work in these roles because we understand the healing powers that our communities hold. We want you to continue to engage, check in, share your feelings, and help yourself and each other heal.
Additionally, please reach out to any of the staff of the Campus Community Centers & Programs. We are here for you.
With the deepest care for all of our communities,
