Celebrating the community impact of the

Refugee Health Collaborative

The St. Joe Foundation participated in the IU Health and IU Health Foundation Celebration of Community Impact on March 14. In December, the IU Health Foundation awarded St. Joe $1 million over three years to support the Refugee Health Collaborative.


The Collaborative includes Amani Family Services, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, International House, IU Health Primary Care Office of Dr. Cho Mar Aung, and DoubleUp Indiana to help meet the needs of local Burmese Nationals. Representatives from the Allen County Department of Health recently visited Fort Wayne Community Schools’ Blackhawk Middle School to see the Cooking in the Classroom program in action.


The program includes cooking and nutrition lessons that are funded with a Health First Allen County grant from the local health department; the St. Joe Foundation supports the learning by purchasing food for the recipes.

Gail's Turning Point

Gail came to A Mother’s Hope after living in several shelters that weren’t a good fit for her. Her first child, a son, was already in foster care and she was due any day with her second child. Gail gave birth to her daughter just a few days after arriving at A Mother’s Hope, but she struggled to feed and connect with her baby. Parenting was difficult because she felt inadequate and lacked confidence.

St. Joe Staff learn about the 'Saint Katharina Effect'

St. Joseph Community Health Foundation staff recently had the opportunity to pause and reflect on the life and teachings of Saint Katharina Kasper, the foundress of the Foundation’s sponsor, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.


Sister Joetta Huelsmann led the staff in a retreat at Lindenwood Center on the Donaldson campus, the home of the American province of the Poor Handmaids. Sister Carole Langhauser, responsible for mission integration for the Poor Handmaids, also joined the retreat.
