The next meeting of the Veterans Book Club will be Thursday January 26, from 5:00 to 7:00, in Administration Building, Fireside Room B. The group will be discussing the graphic novel,  Terminal Lance: The White Donkey  by Maximillian Uriarte.

Max Uriarte deployed to Iraq, including a tour as a combat artist and photographer, where he took photos and drew sketches of Marines in their daily lives all over the country. In 2010 he launched  Terminal Lance, a web-comic that ultimately became the most popular military comic on the internet, as well as being published as a book, and in the  Marine Corps Times a nationally circulated paper.

The White Donkey  is a graphic novel which follows the story of the characters, Abe and Garcia, on their enlistment into the Marine Corps and their first deployment to Iraq, with a heavy emphasis on the return home and the challenges many veterans face battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression.

Uriarte will join the discussion via the web.

The book club has attracted veterans of Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan, family members, and others interested in veteran issues from both the campus and the wider community. The discussion across different conflicts and generations has provided many humorous, rich and deeply personal insights. The Franklin D. Schurz Library is able to sponsor this book club thanks to the generosity of local philanthropists, Jerry and Dorene Hammes. Please RSVP to  rculbert@iusb.edu if you plan on attending.

Enjoy These New Titles over the Semester Break

The library's technical services faculty and staff compile a monthly list of new titles added to the collection. This list includes gift books as well as titles ordered by departments. If you would like either a copy of the entire list, or just a list of titles ordered by your department, please contact your subject librarian

Below is a small sampling of some of our new titles. The links below will take you to the catalog record, which will let you know if the title is available. Too cold to walk to the library? Don't forget about Fast book delivery for faculty, staff, and students living in campus housing.

Special thanks to Susan Thomas, Scott Opasik, and Liz Bell for their work on this project.

Using Microfilm just got a lot Easier!

Our new ViewScan III microfilm machine has a high resolution camera that provides clearer, high resolution images and zooming capabilities.  You also can crop articles so that only the part of the screen you want is saved. Unlike our previous microfilm machine, documents can be printed or saved as pdfs.  The machine is in the same location as before - the Government Documents room on the ground floor.

If you are interested in a tutorial, contact Kirby Cheng at xicheng@iusb.edu .
