Greetings IVAPM Members!
This fall, the Australian Capital Territory took the legal step to declare the sentience of animals, joining The EU, New Zealand and Quebec as governments who recognize that animals can subjectively “feel and perceive the world around them.”
The concept of animal sentience is no big surprise to those of us who are members of the IVAPM. With any basic observational skill, veterinarians and veterinary technicians can easily agree that animals are capable of all the emotions present in the human experience, including pain, sorrow, joy, fear, anxiety and anger. Armed with decades of animal sentient research, the conclusions are clear – humans are not unique beings with this neurologic capability of consciousness.
So, the question remains, why do we still have ‘push back’ from colleagues in veterinary medicine who dispute the idea that animals feel pain, and that pain is worthwhile to identify and treat? Most likely it has to do with education and experience. How many times do you make decisions and assessments based on what you were taught in veterinary school? Change is difficult and although each year brings more evidence about the non-human animal pain experience, veterinary medicine pain management still has far to go.
2020 launches a new decade, and the IVAPM continues our mission to inform and educate both our profession and the public about animal pain. We hope you join us in our fight and continue to advocate for all species when it comes to pain identification and management. Dr. Marc Bekoff argues that “
animals matter, because they exist,
” and I agree. Let us all continue to work together to make the lives of all species better.
Thank you for your commitment to animal pain management,
Happy holidays and I look forward to seeing you this coming year!
Sincerely,
Jennifer F. Johnson, VMD, CVPP
