IVYP News
January 2021
A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

As I approach my third anniversary as Executive Director of IVYP, it seems an appropriate time to reflect on our accomplishments and our future. A year ago, our IVYP board affirmed our raison d’etre: “By building a resilient and connected community, IVYP mitigates the effects of poverty, racism and trauma so that all children and families can thrive.” 2020 has allowed us to test that statement.

The strength of our relationships with the community has meant that people turn to us when they’re stressed or in crisis and needs have skyrocketed. The number of services our clients receive has increased by 146%.

We’ve stepped up to the plate by providing desks to students, meals to families, a bilingual candidates forum, immigration webinars, in-person and virtual childcare and so much more. We’ve continued to convene the Goleta Valley Partnership network to ensure that no one falls through the cracks. The events of January 6 were especially terrifying for children, for our undocumented neighbors, for our immigrant families. IVYP has been there to provide comfort, strength and resilience to our community. By building relationships between adult and child, family to family, and organization to organization, we strengthen our community.

IVYP is ready to continue to serve our community in 2021. In partnership with Cottage Hospital, IVYP is recruiting and training 50 health advocates to distribute COVID information kits to hard to reach families. Beginning at our food distribution on January 21, IVYP will be distributing diapers as well as food. In partnership with UCSB, IVYP is distributing meals to 256 individuals every day.

The work of caring is hard. Please consider making a monthly donation so that we can continue to support our staff and our community. Join me in caring for the care-takers.

Community Health Ambassadors Making a Big Impact Against
COVID-19

In partnership with Cottage Hospital, IVYP is recruiting and training 50 Community Health Ambassadors. These ambassadors distribute medically accurate and accessible COVID-19 information kits to help slow the spread of the virus among Latinx families. Since December, IVYP ambassadors have distributed over 350 kits! From these interactions our FRC has received 54 referrals for additional services - 70% of which are in need of food. In addition, we have seen an increase in IVYP families requesting and receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. We are so pleased to provide comprehensive and long-lasting support to our families.

Staff Spotlight - Ana Maya

"IVYP is an organization that really cares for the community and builds trust and relationships between organizations, the community, and families. People may not know about the FRC and that we are working directly with families. We will provide services to anyone who needs assistance no matter what background, ethnicity, financial status, or where you live. We will never turn anyone away."
Thank YOU!

Thank you to our community for the incredible support you have shown us this past year. IVYP has worked hard to remain nimble and responsive to the needs of families in the Goleta Valley throughout the pandemic. We’ve been providing kits of school supplies, food, virtual learning support for students at home, and providing in person interpretation for community meetings. And all of this could never have been possible without YOU. Thank you for standing side by side with us. We appreciate you!
Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our food distribution. This month we are highlighting oranges! Oranges are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C. Oranges are primarily made up of carbs and water. They’re also a good source of fiber, which may support digestive health. This recipe is a delicious and healthy way to get your family to get your daily dose of oranges.

Get Involved with IVYP
IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community in the wake of COVID-19. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
Did you know that many of our most vulnerable students don’t have a dedicated place at home to do their school work? IVYP will purchase and distribute folding desks to any GUSD student who has a need through our new Study Table Fund. To support this effort click here to donate.
