April 2024

20th Emmaus Talk!

You have now seen in the news from the Episcopal Church that four bishops have been nominated to stand for election as the next Presiding Bishop. I know them, and I am pleased to see the slate of candidates. I will be happy to work with any of them if elected.

This time calls us to keep these four Bishops in our prayers. Each person brings a set of gifts unique and different from others. However, what we need in this time is known only to the Holy Spirit. So, I invite you to pray for the church so that the Holy Spirit will reveal to the bishops who elect the Presiding Bishop and the Deputies of the General Convention who confirm the election to know the right person who will lead us into the next decade.

Also, I want to invite you to please keep the upcoming Pilgrimage at the forefront of your hearts. I intentionally did not use the word “mind.” That’s because God's experience is always personal and subjective. Unless we are in tune with our inner core and the promptings of the Spirit, we will miss how God wants to change our lives. Our experience of God comes to us at the level of our participation in God's revelation at various junctures of our lives.

When the details of the pilgrimage come out, I want you to take that to heart and practice the steps that will be outlined in the program to make our Pilgrim Journey to the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Paradise Point unforgettable.

In preparation for that event and the General and Diocesan Convention, I ask you to pray this simple prayer a few times a day, “Come Holy Spirit. Fill our hearts with love. Amen.”

Your brother in Christ

Monthly Prayer

God of love, thank you for teaching us that death doesn't have the final word. Help us to roll away the rock that blocks the entryway to experience love, acceptance, kindness, and forgiveness. May we become transparent in everything we do, so that we truly become a vehicle of grace for others. Amen.

Appointments & Transitions

The Rev. Shelly Platt

Priest Serving | St. Andrew's, McCall

Rev. Shelly Platt is a cradle Episcopalian, raised in Corvallis, OR, educated in Knoxville, TN, Princeton, NJ, Middlebury College in VT, OSU in Corvallis, BSU in Boise and Northwest Nazarene in Nampa. She has some church life experience with Baptists, Roman Catholics, Nazarenes and Russian Orthodox. She loves Jesus.

She has lived in Idaho for 50+ years, landing first at Burgdorf and narrowly escaping a brutal winter to settle in McCall in 1972. Over the last 40 years, she has served the parishes of St. Andrew’s, McCall, St Luke’s, Weiser, and St James, Payette. She will now return to serve St. Andrew's as their priest and pastoral presence from April 1.

Her interests include fiber arts, all sorts of craftwork, CrossFit, and German Shepherd Dogs. She and her husband, Richard, have 6 children, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Sterling Blackwell

Master of Convention | St. Luke's, Weiser

Bishop is pleased to introduce Mr. Sterling Blackwell. He is appointed to serve as the Master of Convention (a new volunteer ministry) beginning with the 2024 Convention and hopefully for years to come! He has been an educator for 16 years, teaching musical theater and a variety of other subjects across the Treasure Valley. He serves as a vestry member for the St. Luke’s parish in Weiser, ID, is a City Councilman, a local businessman, and a huge advocate for the arts (theater in particular)! When not in a classroom or a theater, Sterling is hiking in the beautiful mountains of Idaho.

Mr. Blackwell will serve as the sole point of contact for anything related to the Diocesan Convention. His role and ministry details will soon be published on the Diocesan Convention page. Carrol Keller will continue to serve as the Convention Secretary.

We want to welcome Sterling to the Diocese of Idaho's pool of volunteer ministers and thank him for saying yes to serving in this role.

The Rev. Kathleen Bean

Priest Serving | St. Thomas, Sun Valley

Rev. Bean needs no introduction as she serves in many roles and ministries in the diocese. She is the Associate Rector at St. Thomas, Sun Valley, and chairs the Commission on Ministry in the Diocese of Idaho. I recently appointed her as the liaison for the Grasslands Project, an environmental justice advocacy program of 12 dioceses, including the Diocese of Idaho. The bishop is pleased that Kathleen+ has accepted the appointment. Thank you, Kathleen.

Trinity Episcopal Church | Pocatello

The Blue Plate Banquet in Blackfoot has been rescheduled. Bishop Jos was not able to cook over the weekend of April 7th due to a viral sinus infection (we are very glad he stayed home with those germs!). He is feeling better and back in the office. We have rescheduled the dinner to take place in Pocatello at Trinity on October 26th. Registration is open and we hope to see you at one of the events! Seats are limited and we will offer an early bird discount of $10 off if you are registered and paid one month before the event! Last year we loved experiencing the Bishop's cooking and the variety of foods from his homeland. We hope to see you at one of these exciting events! Register for Pocatello or Boise by clicking the city.
