Videos are a great way to share our love of flying, and our experiences both building and flying our sport airplanes. How-to video clips can also help us build and maintain our own kit plane, and help us develop new flying skills (of course not replacing professional instruction). Here are just some of the hundreds of Zenith Aircraft building and flying videos:
The Zenith Aircraft YouTube channel hosts many videos posted directly from the Zenith Aircraft kit factory, with flying "demo" videos as well as technical "how-to" building videos. Zenith.aero, the online community for active Zenith builders and flyers, also hosts numerous building and flying videos. Videos from around the world show the various Zenith aircraft models at work and play, with various options and in different configurations:
Compact high-definition cameras (such as Garmin Virb and GoPro) make shooting flying videos easy and provide a great POV (point of view) from multiple and wide angles. Newer features such as 360-degree make videos even more immersive!
You can also find great flying and building videos shared on social media sites, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, though YouTube seems to be the easiest place to find in depth videos. Below are just a few of our favorite YouTube channels from Zenith aircraft builders and flyers:
NEW ZEALAND BACK-COUNTRY FLYING: A newcomer from "down under" Hamish Crowe explores beautiful New Zealand in his Zenith STOL:
GIVE FLIGHT: Members of EAA Chapter 84 of Snohomish, Washington, built a Zenith CH 650, starting the project at AirVenture 2015 as part of the EAA Give Flight program, where five aircraft (three of them Zeniths) were started at the Oshkosh convention. Watch the videos of this project:
"We finished the project in two years with five of us building part-time," stated project leader Jim McGauhey. In 2017, Jim flew the completed Zenith CH 650 1,400 miles from the Pacific Northwest to the AirVenture fly-in in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. “It’s a real sense of accomplishment,” he said.
The Zenith CH 650 is equipped with a full Dynon panel with ADSB-In and Out, and powered by a 100-hp Rotax 912 ULS engine. The finished aircraft is now owned and operated by members of a local flying club, where it can often be seen providing Young Eagles flights to future young pilots!
Jon Croke of HomeBuildHELP.com has produced a line of "how-to" kit assembly videos (available of DVD). "Books and articles have their place but nothing beats watching over someone's shoulder to learn," explains Croke, who has personally built several Zeniths. The HomebuiltHELP YouTube channel contains many informational "how-to" builders tips and hints.
An active young pilot, John Marzulli has made the trip to Oshkosh from Seattle several times in his low and slow Zenith "Seven-Oh-Fun" that he built himself. Most recently, he's built his own low-cost heads-up display (HUD) for his aircraft!
Greg Harris is building himself a Zenith STOL CH 750 from scratch. That's right: He's constructing the entire airplane from plans only (blueprints), documenting the entire process, and sharing informative "how to" videos along the way:
Join Zenith Aircraft Company early next month at the annual Sun'n Fun Fly-In and Expo in Lakeland, Florida, that runs from April 2nd to the 7th.
We look forward to meeting with existing and new Zenith aircraft builders and flyers, and showing the latest kit aircraft models from Zenith Aircraft Company, including the incredible STOL CH 750 Super Duty, the CH 750 Cruzer, and the sleek low-wing Zenith CH 650.
As announced last week, Sun'n Fun's Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), the year-round educational component of SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In, is partnering with Able Flight to enable those with disabilities an opportunity to earn their private pilot’s license in a customized Zenith aircraft that meets their physical needs. The plan is to start building a CH 750 Cruzer at the 2019 Sun'n Fun Fly-In and continue building the aircraft with the help of the Lakeland Aero Club, the youth flying club on the ACE campus. The Zenith will be customized to accommodate student pilots with physical disabilities and become a trainer for the Able Flight program. More Info
