A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

If not now, when? IVYP is taking action. While students and teachers are adjusting to a new school year of virtual instruction, we’ve learned that some students do not have a dedicated place to study. For families who live in crowded conditions, having a safe and healthy study space is a luxury.

To address this pressing need, IVYP launched a fundraising campaign to purchase lap desks for students who need them. When a desk is requested, one of our Family Advocates reaches out and is able to not only provide a desk, but also to assist the family with any other need they might have. It comes as no surprise that every family has additional needs – for rental assistance, childcare, clothing, health care – we have been busy not only distributing desks, but comprehensively supporting families. If not now, when? The 2020 election is right around the corner. While we hear about the Presidential election, our local elections are also important. I think it’s vital to be knowledgeable about local candidates. To that end, IVYP is hosting a virtual Meet the GUSD School Board candidates on Wednesday, October 7 at 5:30 PM. We will be providing simultaneous interpretation, so that both our Spanish-speaking and our English-speaking community members can get to know the candidates.

I’m proud of our efforts to take action on behalf of students and families – so that students can be successful in school and so that families can get to know who may be representing them in leading our local schools.

Join us for a GUSD Candidate Forum
2020 is the most competitive school board race in decades. You’re invited to meet the GUSD candidates and learn a bit about Measure M on Wednesday, October 7 at 5:30 PM. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the issues. School Boards are the decision makers in our local schools. They set the vision and goals for the district and serve as representatives of the community.

Everyone is affected by the quality of local schools. When we have excellent schools, our children thrive and our community flourishes.

Taking Action for Impact

Through our programs, we heard that many children have limited space in their home to learn and are often sitting on the floor with their devices in their lap. The challenge of space only exacerbates the already growing learning divide between children. So IVYP jumped to action and launched the Study Table Fund to help provide comfortable at home learning spaces for Goleta Valley students. In just a few short weeks we have raised enough money to purchase desks for over 100 students! We have begun distribution and are excited for the impact we are already seeing. We will continue to update our community on this effort. Thank you to all those who have already contributed! If you would like to join us in this effort please click here.
Operation School Bell

Our 3-5 year old students got a special surprise this month with a visit from Operation School Bell and Las Aletas from the Santa Barbara Assistance League. 35 of our Children's Center students received bags of clothing and school supplies. In addition, during our Kindercamp this summer Operation School Bell provided our graduating preschoolers backpacks filled with school supplies and clothing in preparation for them starting Kindergarten. We are so grateful for this continuing partnership.
