The available evidence does not support the narrative that "gender-affirming care" prevents bad mental health outcomes.

Some prominent media outlets and advocacy groups tend to fuel this narrative with misleading reporting that often violates the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s guidelines for reporting about the subject in a safe and accurate manner. The British government’s leading advisor on suicide prevention has also urged against using these alarmist claims, warning that they are potentially harmful and not supported by reliable evidence.

Legal/Policy Updates

Biden Administration – The USCCB submitted a response to a proposed rule by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), incorporating a non-discrimination requirement on the basis of “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to its acquisition contracts. Given the lack of explanation about these requirements by HHS, the USCCB noted its concern that such ambiguities may require “gender-affirming care” or care that affirms same–sex attraction to the exclusion of all other forms of treatments or counseling, especially in minors.

The US Census Bureau announced that it would be including questions about "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" for the first time in its American Community Survey by 2027.
