"Your career is the treasury of your life" - Joanne Meehl

November:
Celebrating Gratitude

November is when we consider what we have and do and are , and feel thankful.

Even if you’re in a tough job search or a job you intend to leave, there are good things to be thankful for.

What are yours?

MYTH: "No one hires during the holidays"

NOT TRUE.

There are budgets to spend, sudden new needs, competitors to beat in January, so hiring takes place NOW.

So keep networking, keep sending out your resume, keep asking friends about companies that interest you and who they know there.

I’ve seen new hires (clients) start on December 10th, December 22nd, December 29th.

You could be, too!
New and Unusual Interview Questions
Can you answer "If you had a warning label..."?

I was recently asked by Forbes about unusual interview questions, along with 12 of my peers.

Can you answer these:
  • If you had a warning label, what would it say?
  • What question have I NOT asked you, and how would you answer it?
  • What would you purchase for $100 that would benefit the team?
  • What is your superpower?

To see why some of these and even wackier questions (along with others) are now being asked by employers, read the full article here. I’m now asking many of these questions when I do interview prep with clients, because companies keep wanting to learn more about potential employees, so they’re constantly trying new questions like these.

This month’s Tip from Joanne:

Don’t use section breaks (or page breaks or any other breaks) in your resume

Section breaks force your Word document to insert space or hard returns or other features.

Which sounds good until you learn that the code behind that mechanism can make it difficult for Applicant Tracking Systems to read your resume.

So instead, use good ol’ vanilla hard returns, which are easy for ATSs to read.
Thought for the Month

I learned to always take on things I’d never done before. Growth and comfort do not coexist.
