Pastor's Message

  Dear Friend in Faith,

When my oldest daughter was in eighth grade, the school had a job fair for them to explore vocations. I was asked to come and talk about my profession as a pharmacist. The students did not have a choice as to which one they attended oddly so I had a captive audience of glassy stares. I gave prescriptions of M & M’s which helped the mood a little. After the presentation, the students were encouraged to ask questions. After a long silence, one of the students decided to go for the popular question, “Who is your hero?”

At the time, I don’t know if I had ever really thought about that question. Jesus immediately came to mind. So I said, “Jesus,” before I could answer any other way. My response surprised me, and probably a few of the students, but I still agree with my answer. Then I said, “My heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary acts every day.” One example I shared was about an airplane that had crashed in the icy Potomac River. One of the survivors was a lady struggling to swim to the shore as people watched. The icy water was going to win. A man on the shore finally jumped in and saved her, risking his own life.

There are times when each of us are compelled to do something for someone in need or for someone we love. The urge is unexplainable and usually very strong. Often without much thought for your own good, you know you must act. On Sunday, our Passion series continues as we look at different people around Jesus during Holy Week. This Sunday we will ...
