Recap of Speaker Series
Are  You Ready to  Share
 Your Faith?
Victoria Siedlecki

"Nobody is a Christian for oneself alone. The gift of faith is given to us so that by word and example, we may become witnesses before others."
-Pope John Paul II

St. Bart's was blessed to welcome Dr. Christian Washburn to speak on the subject of Vatican II and Evangelization. The presentation was less about  how to share the faith with others, but more of a reminder to us that the foundation of truth needs preparation before we can stand on truth. Dr. Washburn did a beautiful job supporting the idea of "one cannot give what one does not have." There are a few truths we need while we prepare ourselves to share our faith. Let us review them.

1.) With our baptismal promises of having our ears opened to the needs of others and our lips joyfully proclaiming the good news of Christ, with the support of our brothers and sisters in Christ from St. Bart's Faith Community, with the Holy Spirit living in our hearts, and with our friend Jesus who walks with us every step of the way, we are preparing ourselves to venture out on MISSION. But not just any mission, the great call that Christ commanded us to fulfill. We are to go and preach the good news! What is the good news? That Christ lived, died, and resurrected for YOU!

Matthew 28:19-20 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
2.) What is the GOAL of Evangelization? Is it to fill the pews, create more volunteers or committee members? No. It is to make disciples, which are followers of Christ.

6 Steps to Be a Disciple of Christ

1.) Foster a personal relationship with Jesus.
2.) We are friends to Jesus but he is still above us
and we are subordinate to him.
3.) Embrace the cross.
4.) Renounce all things to Christ.
5.) Accept Christ's truth (ex. Luke 10:27, Romans 12:1).
6.) Be "Fishers of Men". Disciples make other disciples.

The second part of the talk was a reminder of the purpose of Vatican ll.
Evangelization!!!! All people are called to be a part of the one true church.  So, what is "New" about the New Evangelization?
1.) We need to be personal. An iPhone with social media faith sharing capabilities is not going to cut it. We need face to face, personal friendships with people.
2.) Missionaries are traveling to OUR country to evangelize us! What does that say about our need to re-learn our faith?
3.) We are encountering a culture of people who deny the supernatural, who do not believe in miracles, and who will side with science and reason.

Lastly, Dr. Washburn closed with a Q and A and here are a few nuggets of encouragement when encountering others.

Interfaith dialogue:   We must be re-evangelized before we can go out and evangelize to others. One cannot give what one does not have. Pray about what that means for you personally.

Reaching others when there is resistance: Strive for  authenticity of faith in your friendships with people of all beliefs.  Practice having a faith dialogue with other Catholics you trust to get feedback and to feel more comfortable taking about Jesus.

"Bring the excitement of Jesus' friendship to the world, wherever you find yourselves: at work, at school, on WhatsApp, Facebook or Twitter. When you go out dancing, or for a drink, when you meet in the town square or play a little match on the neighborhood field. That is where Jesus' friends can be found. Not by conning others, but by standing beside them and being patient with them. With the patience which comes from knowing that we are happy, because we have a Father who is in heaven." - Pope Francis-
Evangelization Prayer
                      Prayer for the  New Evangelization

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'  But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent?" -Romans 10: 13-15

Heavenly Father,

Pour forth your Holy Spirit to inspire me with these words from Holy Scripture.  Stir in my soul the desire to renew my faith and deepen my relationship with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ so that I might truly believe in and live the Good News.  Open my heart to hear the Gospel and grant me the confidence to proclaim the Good News to others.  Pour out your Spirit, so that I might be strengthened to go forth and witness to the Gospel in my everyday life through my words and actions.

In moments of hesitation, remind me:
If not me, then who will proclaim the Gospel?
If not now, then when will the Gospel be proclaimed?
If not the truth of the Gospel, then what shall I proclaim?

God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith, grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

"Most of us Catholics have become "institutionalized" in the sense that we look to the institution of the Church to carry out the process of evangelization and discipleship in the lives of people in our community. Because of that, we look for a Program, a Procedure, or the Professionals who have been trained to do the job for us. Yet, the answer is rarely found in those three locations. It is found most clearly and comprehensively in Personal relationships. Who can best share the faith with your friends? You can."

Motivation To Share The Faith
"We Become the Books We Read"
-Matthew Kelly-

The following testimony is taken from the Dynamic Catholic website and makes a strong point that we don't need to have the right words all the time when sharing the faith, we might not even need to speak at all. We can let the right book at the right time change people's lives.

I have had some great conversations that came from giving away books-a wonderful way to evangelize. This year, I was determined to give six books away to people who I thought needed a bit of a lift. And I wanted to let God reveal the people to me. I have already given several away, and my goal is to give all six away by Christmas.

I completely agree that giving someone the right book at the right time can be life-changing. I shared a book with a new friend starting RCIA and she was very excited. When a friend had back surgery, I lent her a great Catholic book, and she absolutely loved sitting with that book every day in her cozy chair while recuperating. I even shared Resisting Happiness with a friend after we had an impromptu heart-to-heart. (She is grieving the loss of a sibling and can't seem to find the joy in Christmas this year.) When she received the book, she was thrilled and couldn't wait to start it.

I also think that giving away these books has changed me, not just the people who received them. I now pray a daily Rosary, and many times, each Hail Mary is for a different person in my life. That is often how God reveals to me who would benefit from a certain book. And I now find myself at confession and in the chapel more often. Even my two-year-old son has been impacted. He was listening to me pray the Rosary in the car the other day, and he said in very loud, exuberant baby talk, "For an increase in the virtues of faith, hope, and love!" If only the rest of the world could be so excited about the virtues!

So, what are you waiting for? To get started with your own DIY book evangelization program, you have a few options.

1.)  CLICK HERE to find over 40 different Catholic books that you can give away to others for FREE (just pay the small shipping fees).
2.) Pass along one of the books that you have collected from the Ignite Your Faith campaign or contact Jonell Cella at jonellcella@yahoo.com for a copy of Rediscover Jesus, Ignite Your Generosity, or Nudging Conversions; she will leave your book at the parish information desk for pick up.

What is the New Evangelization?

Scott Hahn's book  Evangelizing Catholics-A Mission Manual For The New Evangelization is a great resource that gives the why and how-to approach for sharing your faith in a real, down to earth way and gives witness to the grace and love of answering God's call to love like his Son Jesus.

"When the Church summons Christians to take up the task of evangelization, she is simply pointing to the source of authentic personal fulfillment. For here we discover a profound law of reality: that life is attained and matures in the measure that it is offered up in order to give life to others. This is certainly what mission means".
