University of Illinois – Willard Airport

It’s an exciting start to the New Year, as we welcome United Airlines to Willard Airport. We’ve been working hard to grow your travel options, and now the airline that serves more cities than any other will connect central Illinois to the world.

United will fly four times daily between Champaign-Urbana and its hub at Chicago O’Hare, beginning April 30. We did the math: travelers flying from central Illinois will have one-stop access to 45 new destinations. You’ll be able to fly to new places with a single stop – cities such as Brussels, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, and Zurich.

We’re working hard to get the Airport ready for the additional passengers United will bring.

Construction on the new TSA checkpoint is nearly complete. It should open before the end of March. We’ll have more than twice the queuing space, eliminating the need to line up at the top of the escalators to get through security. There will also be significantly more space after you clear security, so that you can collect your belongings, and wait for friends and family, without feeling rushed and cramped.

Out on the airfield, we’re beginning a project that will eventually lead to a reconstructed main runway.

United Airlines Returning to Willard Airport

We are excited to announce that United Airlines will launch new nonstop service between Champaign-Urbana (CMI) and Chicago O’Hare (ORD) beginning April 30, 2026. The year-round service will operate four times daily, expanding Willard’s reach by more than 50% and unlocking one-stop access to United’s global network of 200+ destinations worldwide.

American Airlines Celebrates 100 Years — Marking 72 Years at Willard and 85,406 Passengers in 2025

As American Airlines approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, the airline also marks 72 years of continuous service to Champaign-Urbana. In 2025, 85,406 passengers boarded American flights at Willard Airport, a testament to the strength of the partnership and the demand for air service in our community.

New TSA Checkpoint Nears Completion

Construction is nearing completion at the Airport’s new TSA Security Screening Checkpoint. It’s designed to improve the overall security experience, increase queuing room, and ensure a fast screening process.

Willard’s Main Runway Evaluated
for New Pavement

The main runway at Willard Airport, named 14L/32R (“14 left/32 right”) for its compass heading, will undergo a detailed pavement study to develop a pavement and design plan to ensure its longevity.

General Aviation Aprons Ready for Rehabilitation

The aprons used by virtually all general aviation aircraft and pilots will be rehabilitated this summer. Willard Airport leadership, partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation Rebuild Illinois Program, prioritized the project as a signal of how important general aviation operators are to the Airport.

Passenger Terminal and Grounds Set
for Major Upgrades

Willard Airport leadership has prioritized the passenger experience. The airline terminal has been updated in many areas to make it more user friendly. But the work isn’t going to stop. Look for new escalators, new elevators, new exterior façade, and other upgrades coming in the next two years.

Willard Airport: A Hub for More than Just Planes

In 2025, Willard Airport firmly established itself as the hub for rental cars in east central Illinois. Not only was a new rental car center completed in the terminal, on-site companies also rented out more than 17,000 vehicles.

Willard Continues Push for Expanded Airline Service

Behind the scenes, Willard Airport leadership continues its work with the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation to bring additional flights to east central Illinois.
