Illinois High School Hockey Continues to Make History

By Steve Silvey, IHSHL President - Illinois high school hockey continued to make history over the weekend of September 19 – 22, 2019. For the second time, Illinois was invited to the prestigious NAHL and NAPHL event in Blaine, Minnesota. The Illinois Showcase team went undefeated against two Minnesota elite 18U Tier I AAA development teams and two NAPHL 18U league teams. In their two years of participating in the NAPHL Showcase, the Illinois Showcase team has a combined record of 8-0.

Recently, one of our fellow High School coaches and AHAI High School Committee members lost his father after a long and difficult period. The tremendous hours that are devoted to running a High School program combined with running a business and being there for an ailing parent is obviously stressful. Not short changing any of these responsibilities is almost impossible.

AHAI is proud to present the 30th annual series of Seminars on the opportunities in ice hockey on Monday, September 30, 2019, at the Woodfield Hyatt in Schaumburg. We'll talk about Men's and Women's NCAA DI and DIII hockey, ACHA club hockey, Junior College, Prep Schools and Junior Programs.
A wide array of topics will be discussed that will include: Making a College Hockey Team, Financial Aid, How to Pick the Right School for You, Making the Grade and much more! Additionally, there will be an Open House with more than 20 colleges and Junior teams present. Attendance is a must for all players (male and female) born in 2003 through 2006. SEASON-OPENING TOP 25 RANKINGS

New Trier Green is right where it left off last season: The Trevians are the season-opening No. 1-ranked team in the Illinois. Green won the Illinois High School Hockey State Championship (Red Division) this past March and the Trevians cruised to the championship earlier this month in the annual Pre-Season Invitational in Glen Ellyn, hosted by Wheaton West.

Motivation at Home Drives Glenbard’s Brett Quinn on the Ice
|
Brett Quinn is driven for a Glenbard state championship in this, his senior season, motivated by his late grandfather, Tony Ciccarelli.
“My grandpa was extremely influential in my career because he was a successful player and coach himself. I have his state championship trophy in my room to this day,” Quinn said. “Also, my oldest cousin, Shane Quinn, is my role-model. I loved watching his games every year when he came from St. Louis for (various) tournaments.

New Coach, Solid Returning Core Bring Optimism to Lake Forest

Katy Shadek takes over the head coaching role at co-op Lake Forest, an average team last season in Metro Girls, now anchored around Kennedy Stein – a senior forward who has the hardest shot on the team, the most accurate shot on the team, is the best on penalty shots and, naturally, is their best stick-handler.

Senior Sensations: Barrington Built Around 16 Players in Their FInal High School Season
|
Barrington is off to a strong start: undefeated in its first six games. The Broncos are 5-0-1, including road wins over New Trier Blue, Maine Township and BG/H/W. It’s been a fun first eight days of the season for the Broncos. “We have a very close group of players (who) are very excited to make their final year of playing Broncos Hockey one to remember,” said Barrington head coach Steve Martins, 47, in his seventh season, his 10th overall coaching.

Jordan Fliegel, Glenbrook North
|
Jordan Fliegel spends countless hours at North Shore rinks. He is, after all, in his second consecutive season as a goalie for the Glenbrook North JV team. He also is in his second season serving as an assistant coach, this season with the Northbrook Bluehawks Bantam 3 team. And, he is in his third season as an IHOA referee.

North Central DIvision
By Christopher Waters - The North Central League is the largest high school hockey conference in the State! This year the league has 22 varsity teams and 33 junior varsity teams divided among 5 divisions, representing 24 high school hockey programs from all over the Chicago area! Most teams will play around 22 regular season games and 5 playoff games against divisional opponents. The league is excited to add the Lemont-Lockport Spartans and New Trier Blue.

Illinois West Division
By Brian Meek - Illinois West High School Hockey League is ready to begin another year of great high school hockey competition. As always, the League will support a robust Varsity and Junior Varsity Program. In total, 26 teams will participate for the 2019-2020 season. An expected 22 game regular season followed by expanded playoffs will ensure all teams reach at least 30 games.

Metro Girls League
By Pam Flores - The Metro Girls High School League regular season is underway! This year we have 14 teams in the Metro Girls League: Barrington, District 211-214, Evanston, Fenwick, Glenbrook, Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest High School, Latin School of Chicago Blue, Latin School of Chicago Orange, Loyola Academy, Maine Township, Naper Valley, New Trier Varsity and Warren.
