National Telecommunicators Week
April 14-20, 2024
| |
|
National Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW) is held annually during the second week of April to honor public safety telecommunicators for their commitment, service, and sacrifice.
NPSTW initially started in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California. In 1994, President William J. Clinton signed Presidential Proclamation 6667, declaring the second week of April as NPSTW. This week is a time to celebrate and thank telecommunications personnel across the nation who serve our communities, citizens, and public safety personnel 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Learn more about the history of NPSTW and how you can celebrate our public safety telecommunicators.
Throughout this week, we honor and thank those telecommunicators who have continued to serve in this demanding profession.

THE SPRING SESSION
CONTINUES WITH THE
USUAL UPS AND DOWNS
Update from ISA Executive Director,
Jim Kaitschuk
We are quickly approaching various deadlines for bills to move. At this point, I am happy to report that many of the pieces of legislation that we opposed have either been amended to eliminate our opposition or they did not move forward. Although, as we say in Springfield, nothing is ever dead until the gavel swings down to end session. We are still contending with a number of bills including:
HB 1/SB 3695 - this would eliminate mushrooms from being scheduled as controlled substances.
HB 2347 - would raise the age of detention for juveniles
HB 4584 - which would not only eliminate arrest quotas, but would also not allow management the ability to evaluate employees based on the number of arrests that they made.
HB 4726 - would eliminate the automatic transfer of juveniles to adult court for murder or aggravated criminal sexual assault.
HB 4753 - requires the review of any open unsolved murder every 3 years.
HB 5346 - deems certain statements made as unreliable and makes them inadmissible for juveniles.
There is a little over a month of spring session yet to go and we will keep you apprised as we move along!

2024 – March, ISA Files Amicus Brief Supporting Petitioner | |
Standing up for Law-Abiding Citizens' Rights & Fighting to Uphold the U.S Constitution
On March 13, 2024, we, the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association filed an Amicus Brief in the matter of Barnett v. Raoul. We are in support of the petitioner, and the Brief asks the Supreme Court to accept review of this case, and to strike the Illinois assault weapon ban down. The ISA supports efforts to make Illinois and all of its citizens safe, but we also recognize that those efforts must be within the bounds set by the Constitution! For more information and to read the full brief, visit the ISA website linked below.
Working to Protect Crime Victims Rights in the State of Illinois
The IL Sheriffs' Association, along with IL Association of Chiefs of Police, have signed on to another Amicus Brief - that is in support of the State of Illinois, in the case of the State of Illinois vs. Clark. This case calls into question law enforcement's ability to make arrests without warrants. This case would result in significant new threats to public safety. Law Enforcement needs to maintain the ability to arrest immediately to protect it's citizens. This ability has already been previously affirmed by the courts.

Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roads. Cell phone use — specifically, texting, talking, and social media use — has become the most common distraction. Other risky actions include adjusting the radio or GPS, applying makeup, eating and drinking. By driving distracted, you’re robbing yourself of seconds that you may need to avoid a close call or deadly crash.
- Need to send a text? Pull over and park your car in a safe location.
- Designate your passenger as your “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages.
- Do not scroll through apps while driving. Struggling not to text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination.
- Remind your friends and family: If you’re in the driver’s seat, it’s the only thing you should be doing. No distractions.
