National Police Week provides a time to come together to recognize the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as a time to honor the officers who serve and protect their communities each and every day.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy issued the first proclamation for Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week to remember and honor law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifices. Peace Officers Memorial Day, May 15, honors law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

The Illinois Sheriffs' Association would like to pause and recognize that in the month of May we celebrate Peace Officers Memorial Week with a variety of ceremonies. We honor our fallen heroes, their surviving family members for their sacrifice and for placing the lives of others ahead of themselves.

The 2024 Illinois Police Memorial Ceremony was held Thursday, May 2nd at the State Capital. Officers killed in the line of duty during the calendar year 2023, and some historic officers were honored. The Illinois Sheriffs' Association along with several County Sheriff's Offices were in attendance to recognize those fallen officers from all over Illinois.

Last week we celebrated

National Correctional Officer's Week!

National Correctional Officers Week is celebrated in the first week of May. Former President Ronald Reagan established this week on May 5, 1984. He saw the need to create a week for correctional officers to thank them for their services and celebrate their contributions to society. During this week, various U.S. agencies honor correctional officers in our jails, prisons, and community correctional facilities.

The Illinois Sheriffs' Association thanks the men and women who work in the field of corrections for all of your hard work and sacrifice!

Just a small sample of the many thank you posts from around the state! Clay County, Dekalb County, Kendall County, McLean County, Lee County, Kane County, Peoria County, Rock Island County, McHenry County, Iroquois County.

Spring Session update from ISA Executive Director,

Jim Kaitschuk

We are nearing the end of the spring session as less than 2 weeks remain before the scheduled adjournment on May 24, 2024. As usual, we started out the year with a number of bills that were very problematic, including the proposal, HB 4603, that would have eliminated law enforcement’s ability to make “pretextual” stops, including not stopping vehicles unless they were speeding over 26 miles/hour over the posted speed limit. Thankfully, that proposal and others negatively impacting the criminal justice system have not made their way to the finish line.

With that said, we are still keeping a watchful eye for something to pop up and keeping a close eye on:

SB 2633/HB 676 - This bill would allow for those that petition for an order of protection to also seek a search warrant for guns of the respondent. The bill creates due process concerns as well as safety concerns for both citizens and law enforcement. ISA Opposes

HB 2347 - would raise the age of detention for juveniles. ISA Opposes

HB 5271 - would no longer allow defendants to use voluntary intoxication as a defense. ISA Supports

HB 5128 - Provides clarification that the sheriff may be a member of the local emergency services telephone board. ISA Supports

HB 4460 - insurance shall provide coverage for joint mental health therapy services for the officer or firefighter and a spouse or partner of the officer or firefighter who resides with officer or firefighter. ISA Support

HB 5089 - eliminates the exemption for police in who meets the definition of supervisor. ISA Opposes

SB 2778 - Provides that a deputy sheriff applicant who is a veteran and who was discharged honorably no later than 6 months before applying may request examination to occur before the next scheduled examination date. ISA Supports

As part of our continuing commitment to public service, and the support of young people and education, the County Sheriffs of Illinois announced the 2024-2025 scholarship winners. This year, 117 awards will be distributed to deserving students to financially assist their 2024-2025 education costs at any accredited college, university, or trade school in the state of Illinois.

The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association (ISA) established our scholarship program in 1979, and for 45 years, the ISA has awarded scholarships to students who demonstrate outstanding scholastic, extra-curricular and character qualifications.

Since that time, this program has continued as a meaningful expression of the Sheriffs’ confidence in and respect for education, training, and the importance of investing in our youth.

Our Citizen Membership Program is helping to provide these students with more than $59,000 in financial aid and an opportunity to make a positive contribution to society!

A SPECIAL THANKS goes out to each of our committed Citizen and Business Members for their continued donations which help make this and other ISA programs possible!
