Fall Harvest Season - Rural Road Safety is Key!

Click the image to watch the Illinois Farm Bureau's Rural Road Safety Video!

The Illinois Farm Bureau would like to remind us to be aware that it's fall harvest season around Illinois. Illinois Sheriffs want to share their tips for motorists:

  • Above all, slow down and be patient.
  • Reduce speed when encountering farm equipment on public roads. Flashing amber lights mean “caution.”
  • Slow down when you see the Slow-Moving Vehicle Emblem----the orange and red reflective triangle warns you that the tractor or combine travels at a slow rate of speed.
  • Keep a safe distance from the farm equipment so farmers can see you. If you can’t see their mirrors, they can’t see you.
  • Pass wide, large farm equipment only if you know conditions are safe and you are sure the farmer will not be making a left-hand turn. Be cautious when pulling back in.
  • It is illegal to pass in a no passing lane or within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing, or bridge.
  • Be prepared to yield to wide equipment.
  • Always wear a safety belt and heed the road’s speed limit.
  • Watch for the farmer’s indication of a turn. Newer equipment has one or more amber lights flashing rapidly to indicate a turn. Older equipment is typically not equipped with turn signals so watch for the farmer’s hand signals.

SHERIFF'S NEWS:

At the September 10th Jo Daviess County Board meeting Sheriff Kevin Turner submitted his resignation as the Jo Daviess County Sheriff effective December 13, 2024. "It is time for the next generation of officers to take over and take the Sheriff’s Office into the future" - Sheriff Turner stated.

He has served in law enforcement for the last 28 years and in Jo Daviess County for 22 of those years.

From Sheriff Kevin Turner - "Thank you, constituents of Jo Daviess County, for giving me the opportunity to be your Sheriff. It has been an honor to serve as Sheriff of Jo Daviess for the last 14 years. I have had the pleasure to work alongside the best employees a Sheriff could ever ask for.

I have made lifelong friends and lost a few along the way, some friendships that I need to revive. I also gained a Law Enforcement family. I will know leaving the Sheriff’s Office, that the staff will continue to serve with integrity and professionalism.

My greatest accomplishment is my family; without them I would not be where I am today. I want to thank my wife Julie, my daughter Celia, and son Brock for your support and your sacrifices that you have endured during my career. I know there have been times that calls interfered with family time. I know at the time, you didn’t understand why I answered the phone, left the room or was absent for family time. Thank you for allowing me to serve as Sheriff. I love you all!

To my Sheriff’s Office employees, I wish you many years of success and all to return home safe. God bless you all."

ISA Sheriffs Summer Training Conference is coming up in September -

Each year we host two Sheriffs Training Conferences, one in February and this one in September. Our communities have elected Sheriffs to be leaders in public safety and expect them to stay current and up to date on law enforcement training and crime trends, as well as lead by example. ISA Staff and the Training Committee have worked hard to provide the best continuing education courses, and this fall we will have a nationally renowned trainer and guest speaker - Phil Chalmers | American Criminal Profiler and True Crime Writer.

Phil Chalmers is a 40-year American Criminal Profiler, true crime writer, and host of the Dennis Quaid owned podcast “Where The Bodies Are Buried.” His live trainings are legendary in the law enforcement world, as he trains police officers, the FBI, probation officers, school administrators, and many other professionals.
