It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Professor Hong Li. Hong has been a long-standing member of our faculty at the School of Social Work, having joined us in 1999 after completing her PhD at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University and her MSW at the University of Iowa. Hong made many contributions to the School, especially through her research on aging and informal care giving and her teaching of research methods and program evaluation in our MSW program.

Hong’s family has decided to hold private services, but they do welcome cards and remembrances. Email [email protected] to obtain the mailing address.

High COVID-19 Rates in Older Latinos Linked with Economics, Outside Help

A new study, led by professor Lissette Piedra, suggests that economic hardships that were exacerbated by the pandemic and reliance on people outside their households for assistance with everyday tasks may have heightened older Latinos’ exposure to the virus.

Project Helps East St. Louis Residents Overcome Barriers to COVID-19 Testing, Vaccination

A project that is underway in East St. Louis, Illinois, is investigating strategies for overcoming barriers to COVID-19 testing and vaccination among more than 548 medically and socially vulnerable residents of St. Clair County. The National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases provided $975,000 in funding for the project, which is co-led by professor Liliane Windsor.

Study Examines Accuracy of Arrest Data in FBI’s NIBRS Crime Database

As more police agencies transition to the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System for crime reporting, a study of one state’s data found that a design flaw in NIBRS, the timings of arrests and human factors can lead to discrepancies.

Co-author, Theodore P. Cross, a senior research specialist at the Children and Family Research Center, and his team compared the statuses of a statewide sample of 480 cases in NIBRS with data they collected directly from the Massachusetts jurisdictions where the crimes occurred, and found that about 16% of the cases incorrectly indicated in NIBRS whether arrests were made or summonses were issued.
