As of April 5, 2021, the 21st Century Cures Act requires that patients be provided access to their electronic health information (EHI) and that access to such information not be blocked. Eight exceptions to information blocking have been established. The “preventing harm exception” allows the practitioner to engage in practices that are reasonable and necessary to prevent harm to a patient or another person. We will look at the Information Blocking rule and its exceptions, focusing on the preventing harm rule. Additionally, we will discuss updates to the “duty to warn.” This event will take place both in-person and livestreamed virtually.

This presentation introduces a systems-thinking approach to understand how existing structures generate the same outcomes time again and how we can use it to identify ways to intervene that will move the system in a desired direction. Using our iBSW completer program as an exemplar, you will see how systems-thinking can enable the diversification of the profession.

Call to Action to Address Racism & Social Injustice Program Announces Recipients

In July 2020, Chancellor Jones announced a $2 million annual commitment by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to focus intellectual and scholarly talent of the university to examine issues related to racism and social injustice.

For 2021, the program will focus on three critical research areas that are currently the most important and complex challenges facing local communities, states, and our nation: Systemic racism and social justice, law enforcement and criminal justice reform, and disparities in health and health care.

Patients View Perinatal Depression Screenings as Ineffective, Study Finds

A standardized protocol and patient-centered approach are needed to improve perinatal depression screenings, according to a new study. Recent Grad Reflects on Remote Internship

Faythe Newberry (MSW '20) recently had an article published in The New Social Worker, titled "A Not-So-Typical MSW Internship: 100% Remote." The article, co-written by Hellen McDonald, discusses navigating the complexities of completing an internship, which was entirely remote, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
