Call for Artists


The School of Social Work seeks to commission an additional piece to be displayed in our permanent collection of social justice-related artwork. All works of art commissioned for inclusion in this collection will facilitate discussion around racial and social justice and/or elevate and empower underrepresented populations and groups. 


The deadline for submission is October 2, 2022, with planned notification of selection by November 15, 2022, and installation by April 1, 2023.

Dr. Jan Carter-Black Scholarship for Commitment to Diversity & Leadership

The School of Social Work is pleased to announce the creation of a new scholarship in honor of Dr. Jan Carter Black. This scholarship fund has been established through a generous gift by an anonymous alumni family to honor the impact made by Dr. Carter-Black on them personally, as well as the countless lives she has touched during her career.


The donors are sharing their gift as a matching challenge. For each dollar donated in support of this new scholarship, the anonymous donors will match it, up to $25,000.

Randy Fisher Lifetime Career Achievement Award

Professor Brenda Lindsey is the 2022 recipient of the Randy Fisher Lifetime Career Achievement Award by the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA). This is the highest honor provided by the school social work profession for an individual who has made significant contributions to the field.


Brenda has been a longtime school social worker and she has been actively involved in promoting the school social work profession at the School of Social Work, at the state- and national-level. Throughout her career, Brenda has served in many leadership roles to advance the profession. She is well-loved and respected by many students and former students, many of whom have gone on to be leaders in the field.

2022 Early Career Award

Professor Rachel Garthe has been selected as the recipient of the 2022 Early Career Award from the University at Buffalo Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention


This award recognizes an individual who has made exemplary scholarly contributions to the field of bullying prevention research and conducted research that has the potential to influence practice and policy.

The theme this year is Nurturing Your CQI Garden. This year’s conference will highlight innovative strategies for building, maintaining, and reaping the benefits of an effective 21st century CQI system. CQI systems in the 21st century should reflect an organization's policy, objectives and commitment to quality. This includes authentic engagement of the work force and service recipients throughout the CQI process, engaging in CQI activities that center race, equity and inclusion, and applying well developed quality tools and techniques throughout the organization.
