What can you do to help prevent child maltreatment?

Over the past few weeks, multiple incidents of adult misconduct against children have appeared in the media. These types of situations bring attention to an issue that is all too pervasive in our communities. 

As adults, we can work together to prevent harm to children in many different ways: 
  • Create environments that support healthy development in children - normalize conversations with children about empathy, anatomy, development, healthy relationships, and boundary setting.
  • It is our responsibility to recognize situations that feel uncomfortable and articulate our concerns. If something feels off, try to put words to what feels off and why...
 
Recovery Ready Colorado Town Hall
Let's Get #RecoveryReady!

On Wednesday, September 13th from 1:30-3:00pm, Recovery Ready Colorado will be hosting a town hall to discuss the recovery system in Colorado and encourage the community to get involved. Speakers include Attorney General Cynthia Coffman, Lieutenant Governor  Donna Lynne, and more.

At Illuminate, we believe recovery resources are key in supporting families and preventing child maltreatment. Our Circle of Parents in Recovery groups are parent support groups specifically tailored to meet the needs of caregivers with a substance use disorder and/or who have experienced trauma. FASD Awareness Month & Recovery Month
FASD Awareness Month

September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month! There is no known safe amount of alcohol that can be consumed during pregnancy. Join us in spreading information about FASD and healthy pregnancies, and help us prevent FASD.

September is also Recovery Month! Every September, SAMHSA sponsors Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. The annual theme is Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities.

New Illuminate Colorado Staff Members!
Program Coordinator: AnnaMarie Neal, MSW

AnnaMarie has officially joined Illuminate as as Program Coordinator after completing a Masters in Social Work internship with our organization.  As an MSW Trojan graduate student, she concentrated on community organization, planning, administration and the impact of substance use on individuals and societies. 

As Program Coordinator,  AnnaMarie is overseeing the Circle of Parents in Recovery program, facilitating learning communities across the state. Anna's lifelong passion for community service has brought her to Illuminate after serving in the United States Army as a Combat Medic. 

Outside of work, she and her husband are triathletes and are soon to compete in the 2017 IronMan Race in Tempe, AZ. They spend most of their time with their five children, in the CrossFit Community, and going on outdoor family excursions. 
Substance Exposed Newborns Program Manager: Jillian Adams, MSW

Jillian has recently joined our team as our Substance Exposed Newborns Program Manager.  Prior to joining Illuminate, Jillian connected citizens with opportunities to affect health policy as an organizer with Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region in Missouri and most recently developed and managed a national advocacy program with The Climate Reality Project in Boulder, Colorado. With a background in both public health and social work, she is excited to continue to work with individuals, communities, and policymakers to create a happier and healthier world. 

In her spare time, Jillian can be found hiking and camping with her partner and their dog Maximus, cooking with her garden's bounty, or rereading her favorite Austen and Atwood novels.
