BBQ for the Homeless

Brockton's Messiah Baptist Church joined Brockton Neighborhood Health Committee on Aug 10th to hold a barbecue for the city's homeless population and helped kick off National Health Center Week. Thanks, everyone at Messiah Baptist Church, including BNHC Board of Directors member, Sharon Molden, for making this a special day for so many!

Historical Tidbit:

Brockton starts the Electrical Revolution!
By late November of 1882, Thomas Edison had "conceived and drafted a remarkable set of 'blueprints' for synthesizing and assembling 'the world's first completely perfect electric - lighting and motorization - grid."

On October 1, 1883, he opened in Brockton, MA "the first plant to facilitate the production and distribution of safe, standardized, centralized, underground and affordable three-wire electric light and motor power to homes, villages and towns."

Brockton became the first place in the world to have a three-wire underground electrical system when Thomas Edison threw a switch to activate it.

The Search For An Internship During COVID

Images with landscape orientation work the best. We are looking for seasonal images, so don't forget to submit that lovely snowscape you took in February or the fall foliage river-scape you shot last October. (We tend to get most of summer shots. So if you want to increase your odds of having an image selected, send shots of all four seasons!)

TESTING IS THE KEY TO REOPENING THE REGION’S ECONOMY

As the state begins the gradual process of re-opening, employers and their staffs are reminded they can be tested for COVID-19 in less than 10 minutes at the state’s regional drive-thru site at Brockton High School. The governor is basing his re-opening of the state’s economy on these test results, so the more tested, the better. The tests are done by Brockton Neighborhood Health Center and Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital and take less than 10 minutes. Same-day appointments are available, and results come back usually within two days. The test is free on all insurance plans -- if someone does not have insurance, we’ll help them arrange it.

The site is open Monday and Thursday from 4-7p and Wednesday from 9-noon. Please call our testing hotline at 1-844-4test19 to register for your test, or for more information.

Do you love a good detective story?

Check out this project-based lesson for understanding how one's daily choices impact rainforests thousands of miles away. It's a great way to captivate kids' imaginations while they learn at home or in the classroom. Fun and engaging film noir style detective videos introduce and explain each lesson.

Students embark on a detective story in which each lesson builds upon the one before it. The students are the detectives who uncover how the ingredients in their candy may be harmful to the rainforests and those who live in them. They learn about sustainable practices and companies that follow them or don’t. And they are charged with very clear and specific Action Items in each of 5 project steps that walk them through how to accomplish each task. Good Detective Strategies and Helpful Hints are included. The lessons target grades 4-8, but may be easily adapted for younger or older grades.

Your Beautiful Imagination

I am convinced compassion, love, and a healthy dose of imagination will get us through. When we create together, we dream together and we emerge better and healthier people.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
~Albert Einstein

“Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”
~ Gloria Steinem

“If you fall in love with the imagination, you understand that it is a free spirit. It will go anywhere, and it can do anything.”
~ Alice Walker

“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” ~ Mark Twain
I hope you have time to breath, let go of that tension and unleash your imagination. It's the beginning of something beautiful!
~ Jacquie
