Imagine Church Devotional
"The Inviting Place"
A pastor called on a young couple off-and-on for five years. They were always pleasant and said they planned to attend church, but never did. In the fifth year, a layperson who knew the husband invited him to play in the church praise band. He was an excellent guitarist, and the team enjoyed having him. A few weeks later, the family attended church. Within a short period of time, they had all become involved in various groups and made the decision to become followers of Jesus Christ.

There you have it: a dedicated, faithful, theologically trained, evangelistically oriented pastor visited for five years -- nothing. An untrained, friendly layperson who spotted a good guitarist extended an invitation -- success!

A small bank in a little town had only two employees, the manager and a teller. One day, no one came into the bank at all. Finally, at 4:30 p.m., the manager told the teller to lock the front door. Minutes later she returned and said sheepishly, "It is locked. We forgot to open it this morning!"
Invitations are the way Imagine Church opens its doors. In the ministry of attracting first-time worship visitors, we should not worry about drawing a square on a map around Gordon-Conwell Seminary and "serving our neighborhood." There are virtually no "neighborhood churches" left in America today. When people started driving cars, they began picking churches relationally, not geographically. According to a new member study by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), only 12.3% of new members are influenced to join by a church's location. If Imagine Church is within 25-30 minutes driving distance of people's homes (the travel comfort zone for American church attendees), then they are in our field of mission.

How do you choose your friends? By drawing squares on a map? People choose their churches the same way they choose their friends -- because of the relationship they have with someone who invites them to attend. Let's make sure that Imagine Church is always an inviting place. See you on Sunday -- and make sure to invite a friend!

In the name of the One who can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,
Bruce Jones, Pastor and Co-Creator,
Imagine Church of the Carolinas
Worship This Week
Do you know one major difference between life on your own and life in Christ? Life on your own says, "I'm in charge here. It's all about me. I can do it! Just give me the rules, tell me what you expect -- I can handle it!" But there is something humbling about one's life in Christ. There is humility when we say, "God, I need this, and I don't know how to do it, so I'm going to need your help." That's where it starts, and we're going to take a deeper look at this idea in our 10:15 a.m. worship this Sunday, April 25, with a message titled "Christian Baby Steps." We hope you will be with us, in person on the beautiful Charlotte campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, or online on the Imagine Church Facebook page. See you Sunday!
Looking Ahead
Happiness is not an accident -- it's a choice. You were meant to live a life free from worry, shame, and resentment. But it won't happen just by chance. You can learn how to be joyful regardless of what comes your way. "The Habits of Happiness" is a new series at Imagine Church beginning Sunday, May 2. We invite you to be with us, in person or online!
Mother's Day began in 1908 when a Methodist laywoman, Anna Jarvis, wanted to honor her mother in worship at her church. The idea caught on, and quickly became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. On Sunday, May 9, Imagine Church will honor all mothers who are present for worship with an individual gift and flower. You are invited to bring your mom and enjoy a special worship experience together at Imagine Church.
Building plans for the new Imagine Church facility will be unveiled on Sunday, May 16 (note the change in date from the previously referenced May 2). For most, this will be their first look at the layout, floorplan, and appearance of the structure that will become Imagine Church's permanent home. We will detail the plans via the screens in worship and will do our best to show them for our online worshipers as well on Sunday, May 16.
Recognition of our stellar group of 2021 high school and college graduates will take place during morning worship on Sunday, May 23. If you have a 2021 high school or college graduate who is part of our Imagine Church family, please email the following pieces of information to Kari DiDonato, our Church Administrator, at imaginechurch2014@gmail.com:
a) Graduating senior's name
b) Name of high school/college from which they are graduating
c) If a college graduate, what degree(s) are they receiving
d) Any honors or awards received
e) Future plans (collegiate or vocational/employment plans)

We're Proud of our Serve Day Workers
We are grateful to the members of Imagine Church who served these two community non-profits on Serve Day, Saturday, April 17: Clover Area Assistance Center (CAAC), led by Fred Wetherell, assisted with outdoor improvements; and Palmetto Women's Center, led by Debra Tadlock, constructed a prayer garden consisting of benches, painted rocks, a birdbath, and other artwork. Serve Day is just one example of how we can be the hands and feet of Jesus right here in our local community! Be sure to check out our Facebook post to see all the great photos from Serve Day 2021!
Imagine Kids
When you worship in person at Gordon-Conwell, elementary aged Imagine Kids (grades K-5) are dismissed from the chapel early in worship for their session with Gregory, so we invite you to spread the love and share the fun by bringing a friend with you to Imagine Kids, too!

Whether you're worshiping with us in person or from home, we invite you to catch all of Gregory's pre-recorded weekly messages for Imagine Kids and their families on our Imagine Church Facebook page on Sundays at 9:45 a.m. This Sunday's message is titled "Too Good to Be True?" And, in case you missed it, here is this past Sunday's message, "What Did the Enemy Think?", brought to you by Gregory, Elijah, and Lilly.
Memory Verse:
Parents, here is the memory verse for you to practice with your child(ren):

"When they entered the tomb, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus." (Luke 24:3 NIRV)

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

One of the hardest things to do in life is to forgive. When people don’t treat you the right way, when they make fun of you, bully you, or give you a hard time for what you believe, it can be really hard to forgive and be kind like this verse challenges us to do.

Thankfully, that’s not what God did. God gave us the love we need to love others. He tells us that His love has been placed in our hearts. So God has given us what we need to love others. We can be kind, tenderhearted, and forgive others because God has given us what we need to do it.

Be the Hands and Feet of Jesus
There are so many opportunities that exist for our church to be the hands and feet of Jesus by helping others through various means of service right here in our community and around the world. If you have a heart for missions, you are invited to join the Missions Team or simply support its initiatives. For more information about the Missions Team, please email Kari DiDonato at her Imagine Church email: imaginechurch2014@gmail.com
Imagine Church's very first SERVE DAY was a huge success, and we are very grateful to Julie Van Slambrook and Fred Wetherell for heading up this special initiative.

This past Saturday, April 17, twenty-two (22) youth and adult members of Imagine Church served our community at these two local non-profits:

Fred Wetherell led a group of six (6) at Clover Area Assistance Center (CAAC) with a variety of outdoor improvements including trimming back 100 yards of overgrown hedges and hauling away the debris.
Debra Tadlock led a group of fifteen (15) at the Palmetto Women's Center in Rock Hill with constructing a prayer garden. The group installed sitting benches and a bird bath, hung bird feeders, and arranged pavers and other stones in beautiful decorative patterns.

Check out our Facebook post for more great photos from Serve Day 2021!

The Missions Team will meet again this coming Monday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the First Properties of the Carolinas office (1 Executive Ct, Lake Wylie). Even if you haven't attended a previous Missions Team meeting, interested youth and adults are encouraged to attend to discuss upcoming missions and to start talking about some long-term goals. We hope to see you on Monday!

Prayers and Praises
We are happy to celebrate the birth of William Reeves Griffin, son of Adam and Jessica Griffin, born on April 16, 2021, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Proud grandparents are Phil and Cindy Griffin. As Will grows in years, may he also grow in grace and in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Annastin Gunn has bounced back from her days in the hospital and was able to take part in a dance competition last weekend. Regular treatments will continue, but we are pleased to report that she is doing well.
We continue to pray for Meredith Martone (recovering from injuries in a vehicle accident), Hank Freitag (brother of Bonita Nugent) as he receives good reports as he continues his cancer treatments, and Jerry Brownlee (father of Lydia Smith) as he improves following heart-related issues and hospitalization.

Why Imagine Church?
Together, we have embarked upon this new adventure of faith and faithfulness based on the lesson of creative abandonment: forsaking what does not work for what does. We're humbled to be on the ground floor of what God is up to in the world today. Our community and your life will never be the same. That's Imagine Church!
Why can't church be more like that?
