Imagine Church continues to strongly recommend the wearing of masks for indoor worship as long as the city of Charlotte's mask mandate is in place requiring face coverings to be worn in any indoor public space regardless of vaccination status. This is also the position of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary where Imagine Church meets, and, therefore, masks will be available in the rotunda at GCTS when we worship indoors. However, knowing it's safer when we can meet outdoors, Imagine Church will be implementing a series of three outdoor drive-in worship experiences beginning this Sunday, October 10, and continuing through Sunday, October 24, on the new church site at 5471 Highway 55 East in Lake Wylie, so we hope you will join us outdoors for worship, as well.

Imagine Church Devotional
"Leaders Who Can Be Trusted with Power"
What's the best way to exercise the use of power? The biblical model, as demonstrated by Jesus, suggests that the men and women who have shaped the thoughts of people through the generations are men and women who, instead of hoarding power, were willing to give power away. In fact, most of you carry in your wallet a picture of someone who exemplified this.

I don't know if you've ever studied George Washington, but he was an extraordinary man. Let me share with you some of my favorite quotes from American history about him found in a book called Founding Brothers, written by Joseph Ellis. My point is simply this: learning to leverage your power for the sake of others, and learning to give power away appropriately, is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of incredible security and strength.

Joseph Ellis writes, "It is crucial to recognize that Washington and his extraordinary reputation rested less on his prudent exercise of power than on his dramatic flair for surrendering it." Washington was elected President once, then twice, and many wanted to elect him a third time. Others wanted to make him a king and create a monarchy like they had in England. However, Washington rejected the mantle of emperor and refused to become a king. Even King George III in England said, "If he does that (turns down the opportunity to be the emperor of the United States of America), he will be the greatest man in the world."
True to his word, on December 22, 1783, George Washington submitted his resignation to the Congress at its meeting in Annapolis. And here is the quote: "Having finished the work assigned to me, I now retire from the great theater of action." Doing so, he became the supreme example of a leader who could be trusted with power because he was always ready to give it away.

Can you imagine how different the influence of the church would be if Christians, when we recognize that we have power, immediately begin to look for an opportunity to leverage it for the sake of others? When you follow the example of Jesus and give away power appropriately, you gain tremendous influence. Solomon, another very powerful person, said, "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act."

That's what you do if you really want to be powerful. You should always be ready to give your power away.

In the name of the One who can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,
Bruce Jones, Pastor and Co-Creator,
Imagine Church of the Carolinas
Worship This Week
We're hoping the weather cooperates because we all look forward to the return of outdoor worship on our new church site at 10:15 a.m. this Sunday, October 10, with two more Sundays to follow on October 17 and 24. If you have not been to the church property, it is located at 5471 Highway 55, East, in Lake Wylie across from the Summerhouse neighborhood and just west of Pelican's Snoballs. You are invited to bring camping chairs or folding chairs to sit outside, or you can remain in your vehicle if you wish. We will have outdoor sessions for Imagine Kids and Imagine Nation Youth, and Bruce will deliver part 2 of our new series, "Rescue Mission."

In case of rain, or if the property is too wet from this week's expected precipitation, we will instead move worship back indoors at Gordon-Conwell (watch for Saturday's email announcement and a message on the church's Remind App). Mid-autumn is a great time to have outdoor worship, and we look forward to the next three Sundays on the new Imagine Church site with you, our church family.

"Jesus spoke to the people again. He said, "I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in darkness." (John 8:12ab NIrV)

"Jesus spoke to the people again. He said, "I am the light of the world."

Weekly Devotion:

As a teenager, there is nothing more fun than taking a dodgeball and hurling it with all your might toward a player on the opposing team. Follow that up with the awesome feeling you get when that dodgeball produces that satisfying smack as it hits your target’s body. Playing dodgeball can be a lot of fun, but did you know that you can learn a lot about reading your Bible by playing dodgeball?

There’s A Goal
In Dodgeball, you have a goal. You have to hit as many of the other team’s players with a ball before they hit you and you’re out. We should approach reading the Bible that same way, with a focus and a goal. Reading the Bible shouldn’t be a boring aimless task, but it should have a purpose.

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 3:14 (NIV)

For example, you could read the Bible with the idea in mind that you want to know what God says about your future and the plans He has for your life. You could find verses in the Bible on that topic. Having a goal and a focus like this when reading the Bible helps it from becoming dull and boring.

The Game Changes You
Another thing that can be learned from dodgeball games is that the game changes you. When you start the game, you smell good and your clothes are nice and clean. Usually, by the end of the game, the players are sweaty, and they definitely don’t smell good.

In the same way, that is how we should be after reading the Bible. There is great power available to you in the Bible. It has the power to change your life. The words in the Bible can encourage you when you’re having a bad day. The Bible can also challenge you to be more than you ever imagined you could be. Reading the Bible will change you because the Bible has the power to change your life!

Hebrews 4:12 “For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective];” (AMP)

The Bible has power in it to change your life! Get into the habit of reading the Bible with a purpose and getting to know God through His word. If you do, it will change your life!

Take a Moment to Pray: God, I thank you for your word. I thank you that it is alive and full of power. I thank you that I can get to know you through your word. I purpose to make reading the Bible a priority in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

OCTOBER'S MISSION FOCUS:
~ Clover School District's Holiday Assistance Program ~
~ Thanksgiving Turkey Dinners Delivery ~
"What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, "Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well" -- but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn't enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless."
~ James 2:14-17 (NLT)
Many in our church family will say this is one of the most meaningful ministries we support, and so we are excited to highlight our Thanksgiving Turkey Dinners Delivery throughout the month of October.

This year, Imagine Church will partner once again with the Clover School District (CSD) for what will be our 7th consecutive year of purchasing and delivering turkey dinners as part of their Holiday Assistance Program, a need-based program where families in the CSD can sign-up to receive meal and gift assistance for kids during the 2021 Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

On Wednesday, November 24, 2021, we will deliver boxed Thanksgiving dinners to recipients in the Clover/Lake Wylie/York community. Each boxed meal typically serves 8-10 people and will consists of a 9-12 lb. frozen, pre-cooked turkey and half-a-dozen side items to round out their meal.
Last year we purchased and delivered 50 boxed Thanksgiving meals in the Clover/Lake Wylie/York community, and we've indicated our willingness to serve even more families this year. Although it isn't finalized yet, the cost of each boxed turkey meal will likely be around $60, and so, in order to carry on this meaningful tradition, we are needing you, our church family, to contribute financially toward this initiative. If you are led to contribute any amount, you can make a cash, check, or online contribution toward this initiative. Please be sure to clearly designate all cash or check donations as being directed toward "Thanksgiving Meals".

We encourage online donations using this link:

And we ask that you please designate all online donations for "Thanksgiving Meals".

We wholeheartedly thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus by helping to make this outreach a reality again this Thanksgiving!
