At Sea

Dear Imagine friends and family,

We win and we lose. Heather Miller is moving on from Imagine to a new position as Resources and Operations Manager at Camphill. See below for some appreciation which I will summarize with: For 12 years, Heather has done a lot of jobs very well and it has always been more fun for the rest of us because she was here. We expect to see a lot of her going forward and to miss her in between. There is an appreciation below.

We did go (a little bit) out to sea on the first. It was a very fun adventure that we took together. Life together is always an adventure but it's nice to do some of it like pirates. I expect the photo column will fill up with photos from that trip but it was generally a really nice time. For most of the excursion, I got to spend time with Jake and Garrett and I really enjoyed Jake's excitement and learning more about Garrett's ambitions. That was an experience shared all over the boat with different casts of characters.

Back on land, we had a visit from one of our distinguished alumni. Micah was served by Imagine for four years but never entered our offices. He once was seated in a van in our parking lot. His team arranged for him to come see me, drink chocolate milk and eat ritz crackers (Micah selected the menu) and meet Jessica R, Angie and Eileen.

I have missed Micah, although I manage to visit him at home occasionally. It means a lot, though, to have him visit because that was once so difficult for him to spend time in an uncontrolled environment and he has grown into someone who can spend time with us. I do hope you all will get to meet him at future Imagine events. Hope to see you soon, M. You are a very good creature and human with I, too.

Finally, I am making my second try at a vacation from June 2-16. If you have any concerns, feedback or questions during that time, feel free to contact someone else. Be well.

Further down, this month's newsletter includes the following:.

An appreciation of Heather Miller, leaving after a dozen years, Heather has been one of the central people in the evolution of Imagine during that dozen.

Patty Lopez announces the all-staff meeting for June.

The Person-Centered Evolution column leaves last month's in place because I am halfway out the door, y'all.

Our usual stuff in the column around self-determination.

The Advocacy Corner discusses the state budget.

Our monthly Transparency at Imagine column includes a repeat of next year's approved budget, 2021's and 2022's final audits as well as our latest IRS Form 990 as submitted May 15. It also includes a long description from me of my views on how to use any funding increases included in this year's state budget.

This month we have spotlights on Jake and Connie, together.

As ever, I am at your service. If you have any questions, feedback or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch. You can write me here. I look forward to hearing from you.

Gratefully yours,

Doug

Thank you, Heather

In June of 2012, Heather Miller, then Cahill, brought her baby daughter, Mya, to a housemate position with our client, Charles I. Since that time, she and Mya have grown up as part of the Imagine family. Heather even married into Imagine, having completed her Family with former Facilitator and Director of Services Charlie. Her dog, Combo, manages the office. She has been a housemate, lead staff, Facilitator, book-keeper and Operations Manager.

Above the call of duty, she has helped arrange many of our fun events, managed our social media (if you read this through a link on Facebook, it will be sweet revenge that she will have put it there.) She's also been the library of our history. At meetings, some will open a binder and say "When is this individual's birthday again?" or "I have to check when that individual started at Imagine" and if Heather is in the room, she'll tell you right off the top of our heads.

With the turnover we've had among Facilitators, Heather remains the champion expert with regard to what is likely to work or why not with our longer-term clients.

She is very smart and very much a self-starter. Her efficient approach to book-keeping has meant that for the last year or so, book-keeping hasn't been a full-time job, although she does it accurately and usually has a month's financials ready before the second week of the following one. She has filled the liberated hours working on long-term projects and ephemeral activities meant to make Imagine a better service organization.

Her sense of humor has helped all of us in the office enjoy our work better. Her passion for doing everything right has helped us keep our North Star in front of us and is Camphill's problem now. We will all miss her very much and we all wish her the best in her new positions.

For the record, Ethan would love to see Mya and I wouldn't mind toasting Charlie or scratching Combo. Don't be a stranger.

Person Centered Evolution

Person-centered thinking tools are used well in three ways. Some are best used as a daily part of the life of an individual and their care team while others make the best sense on events designed for the purpose. It has long been a standard at Imagine that house meetings for each client and team are held monthly and that each one includes a person-centered thinking tool. If you just rolled your eyes, that's fair.

But in light of the column just above, once a Facilitator is on top of their work, the minimum standard that most Imagine Facilitators have failed to meet for most of the time starts to become addressable. Below are some photos of a house meeting that met the standard and did the work. These are photos of the agency we're still aspiring to be and the individual

The Redwood Chronicles

This month we get two stories from Jake:

For the last 3 weeks there has been a Lizard at my bedroom door that seems to want to play hide and seek with me. When My Staff Connie says “There it is!” He runs and hides. One day We Hope To Capture Mr Lizard on Camera to Share With Everyone.

Until then Connie and I will continue to play hide and seek with Mr Lizard.

Moral: A picture may not steal your soul, but it might end your game.

One day the first week of May 2024, CCR Angie came to cover a shift with me. Angie and my staff, Connie, took me out in the community so we went to The Moss Landing Island (Harbor.) I had noticed that they dismantled the old PG&E Plant and only left the two smoke stacks standing.

It was a great adventure in Moss Landing, seeing all the big fishing boars and charter boats (like the one the Imagine Crew went on) then we went to the Elkhorn Slough to take a quick stroll looking at the wildlife. Then, in the distance, I could hear a train whistle and before our eyes w a big silver train, The Amtrak, rapidly traveling with its passengers. I had a great adventure with many more to come.

Moral: Every pillar must pass but passing through will always last.

Human Resources Corner

Hello Everyone,

We will be having our first All Staff Meeting of the year on the 19th of June, from 12-2pm. It has been an eventful first half of the year and though we intended to have an All Staff earlier, this is what we have managed so far.

I know there has been much request for a meeting, especially as new policies have rolled out. We will definitely be discussing any issues or questions that have come up from these new policies, in particular our new Maximum Hours Policy. We will also be presenting an Overtime Request Form, and going over any questions or concerns you may have.

If there is anything you would us to go over at this All-Staff Meeting that I haven't mentioned, please let me know and I would be happy to address it.

Thank you for your patience and understanding regarding the scheduling of this meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Best Regards,

Patty Lopez

The Year of The Facilitator

There isn't much to report this month. There has been no new turnover among Facilitators in May, although a few months is less than we should hope for. Absenteeism, often for very understandable reasons continues to run probably ten times above what it is for caregivers or other members of the Leadership team. That makes it clear we still need to do better. We are continuing to tinker with how we support Facilitators in the hope of making excellence sustainable.

Your input on how the Facilitators' jobs can be made easier or more rewarding is welcome.

Self-Determination

Self-Determination is now available for any regional center client who chooses it but it sure ain't running smooth. Tentatively, I think it is getting a little better but boy howdy, is there room for improvement to continue.

If I can be of any help, please feel free to contact me. I'm pleased that there are a few current and recent Imagine employees who are developing Independent Facilitation practices and I'll be glad to connect them with those looking.

This month, the Independent Facilitator Roundtable will be June 5 , at 11AM. The Zoom link is here. The May meeting never happened nor did the make-up meeting. I will miss the June meeting but hope it happens and that any of you who wish to attend.

The Independent Facilitator Network, a confederation of professionals working self-determination (which started at Imagine!) has a Slack Channel you can join by clicking here. Individuals receiving services and family members are welcome and it's a great place to have your SDP questions answered by sad, wise experts.

Community Connections

Greetings from the Community Connections Committee! It was great to see those of you able to attend our May meeting, which was our first of 2024. While our group was small the ideas were BIG and I look forward to meeting more often and regularly.

Some of the feedback I got from those unable to attend were regarding the time and location. With that being said, we will work to make sure our next meeting is at a time that will be more inviting. Additionally, I will be reaching out to our friends at Common Roots Farm about having our next meeting there.

Many topics were covered at our last meeting. We discussed the increase in business costs, from annual audits to the ongoing costs of PPE. Additionally, we spent time discussing just how much has been dedicated to the direct care team and how rates have been impacted and increased over the past two years. We were able to discuss some goals for the committee and ideas on how to get more involved.

It remains to be seen but is seeming more and more unlikely that California will approve the final wave of rate increases for support providers this year. However, previously implemented increases have helped Imagine to find more and more candidates, in addition to retaining so many. While some ideas were discussed on how Imagine can raise more funds and decrease costs, care staff wages remain a priority.

If you have suggestions or topic ideas for our next meeting in July, please pass them along. When we send out the July newsletter we will include the final details on the topic, date and time for it to happen. I and the rest of the committee look forward to seeing and hearing from more of you in the coming months.

Thank you,

Raul Rekow

Transparency At Imagine

The next board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17. Close watchers will realize we are not meeting in June as we would normally. This is in order to accommodate my second-try vacation and some vacation planned by Janine. Plus, the board has approved our 2024-2025 Budget which I just be you'd like to pore over so it is attached

We submitted our latest Form 990. This is a disclosure required of 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organizations by the IRS. It has a lot of information about what we do, especially with our funds. If you would like to cast a weather eye on it, you can download it here. Just a note, this is a board-approved submission but also subject to amendment. There were some corrections/explanations needed that didn't; merit missing the deadline.

Our meetings are open to all and if you email Maggie she'll make sure you get in and fed and heard. The agenda for the meeting will include a proposed budget for our fiscal year that begins July 1.

We have completed a two-year audit of our financials through June 30, 2022. You can read it here. It is an unmodified opinion, which is Accountantese for "you're good" and it came with a lot of suggestions with regard to how we can improve our reporting throughout the year. We give an unmodified thank you to our partners at BryMar. We have started our final audit before we are all caught up.

Pharoah's Dream: For your money, you are about to get an extra several hundreds of words meant to bring transparency to upcoming events. These are my views alone but the board has heard them and likely to keep hearing them.

The state of California has been running a large 10-figure annual deficit and that is expected to continue. Between now and the start of July, the Governor and legislature will likely settle on one of two courses of action- either make a strong effort at closing the long-term deficit and hopefully avoid more painful decisions down the road, or vote generously in the short term and hope for the best in the years to come. In the latter case, anything but the best case scenario probably leads to deep cuts quickly.

As of this writing, and likely through mid-June at the least, there are rate reforms due to take effect on July 1 which would improve Imagine's funding. If the state policy-makers decide to address the budget deficit and put the state on a sustainable course, those reforms will be delayed, likely for a year, in which case they could be delayed again. If the rate reforms go through during the budget year, that would be taken as a sign that California will once again wait until there is no choice but to make drastic cuts quickly.

Imagine's 2024-2025 budget has passed. It is balanced and assumes no revenue enhancements, because we are not The State of California. In the event that the revenues are enhanced, I expect that my advocacy to the board will be to spend as little of the new funding as is legally compliant in order to hoard cash that might allow us to get through a looming funding crisis without cutting positions or reducing direct care wages. This will be a very different decision than we have made in the past, especially last year when we gave about 80% of new funding to caregiver compensation. I wanted to be transparent about what my advocacy will be and why.

In truth, Imagine's finances have been improving from a bad place earlier in the year. These improvements are not directly tied to funding improvements but to our ability to hire new people and serve new people more efficiently, which actually is due to the previous revenue enhancements.

If we reopen the budget in the next year, it will be for one or two purposes: to add a position to the leadership team if our growth permits and, possibly, to increase caregiver compensation if the terms of the funding increases require. But I do want to be clear that, to avoid a medium-term future where caregiver wages are no longer sustainable, I will be urging the board on a course of saving more more and paying less more until the state budget seems sustainable again.

We are still recruiting board members. We are working to diversify the board and to add a GAAP-trained treasurer. An attorney wouldn't be bad either. Neither would you. If you know someone with a passion for our mission who might like to volunteer, please write to me.

Advocacy Corner

The May Revise Budget was released early.

It seeks to close a portion of the projected Budget Deficit, mainly through delays of various short term expenditures and construction projects. There is no substantial change to the portion of the budget that funds Imagine and rate reform which would make a significant improvement to Imagine's funding, remains in the budget. Some early action was proposed to address about $14 billion of the budget deficit and these actions are well under way.

There remains a similar amount of deficit to close. The numbers seem to get a little less reliable as the budget season goes on. As mentioned in the Transparency section above, I'm not in a place of trust with regard to the funding included in the budget and suspect that either substantial cuts and delays are either imminent in the budget or that worse cuts are not far ahead.

As always, thanks to Marty Omoto of CDCAN for amplifying the transparency and circularity of information between the community and policy-makers. If you would like to receive CDCAN's extensive reporting, write to Marty. CDCAN's work is entirely funded by the donations of those of us who benefit. Write to me or to Marty if you'd like to kick in. In the photo is Alex Omoto, Marty's son and my friend, at the Master Plan kickoff meeting, giving events their due.

Person-Centered Evolution

The "One Pager" is a tool designed to be a starting place or other way point. It is a simple tool and an elegant one with a profound impact.

It is often the first tool we use with a new client as a way to get to know them. It is typically the first tool we show a new caregiver.

It's also a powerful way to explore what we've learned and how the person we serve has grown and changed. When you workshop a new one-pager, its simplicity gives a great opportunity to realize how much more specific the team and the person can be. And whenever the one-pager is renewed, it is better and more helpful as the starting point for training a new caregiver, introducing a new doctor, etc.

Spotlight on Connie and Jake

Jake and Connie are two peas in pod. When they are together you bet they are deep in conversation, listening to every note of a classic song, exploring a new movie or show, laughing at the lizard that plays peek a boo or in hang in silence when Jake is chowing down on some homemade tortillas. Connie is a beautiful maestro helping Jake write emails, stories, and messages to his parents. Sometimes, when I visit, my favorite thing to do is to listen to Connie and Jake talking, goofing around and giggling before they know I’m there. It fills me with such joy to not only hear the connection but feel the connection. Connie is always happy to see me and greets me with a huge hi and big smile… but Jake… he’s courteous but quickly signals me to see my self back through the door because it is obviously Connie and Jake time. I mean at one time I was one of Jake’s favorite people almost surpassing Doug’s spot at a solid number 2 to his mom and dad’s number 1 spot. Now Connie has knocked us out of the running and I am not upset about it. As a Facilitator of course we want to have a strong connection with our clients, but it’s more rewarding when our staff build stronger bonds and they both enjoy their time together. I can’t wait to see what the summer series brings to the Connie and Jake show but I am first in line.

Jake I am so happy that your transition into supported living has brought you to know the amazing people that surround you daily and bring you happiness. Here’s to many more years! *cheers with tacos!

Connie it’s a pleasure to be your manager and see you shine in your element.

A little note from Jakes parents, Jennifer and Kirby Wilkins.

“We are so glad Connie is on Team Jake, because she is very kind to him, she has fun with him, and she is a great cook. He loves spending time with her!”
